As for the other, well, one of my friends has had at least two promise rings of the "pre-engagement" variety from guys she's no longer interested in. I think that says it all right there.

This is the kind I am familier with and wore myself. Well, actually it was around my neck (ring on a chain) as I hated the feeling of rings on my finger. My wife took the neckless off on our wedding day. I was happy to make it till marriage as a virgin, it was a promise I actually kept.

EDIT** and the whole promise ring thing was never just for Girls, at least not the type I am talking about. I had many guy friends in church with them who had their wifes remove them the day of the wedding. I dunno how many of them should have still been on though...
