Quick bump: I'm going with a Weber Spirit E310 with no side burner for $499 or the E320 with the side burner for $549. Is the side burner worth it for the extra $50? Not sure how often I'd use it, but for $50, I think it'd be nice to have.

If you like to cook outdoors, it's handy. I have a very tiny kitchen, which gets hot FAST, so I try to do everything on my patio that I can - you can throw beans in a pan or do some basic deep-frying in a pot on it or whatever, which is handy if you have some potatoes & meat on the main grill.

For $50, I'd do it.

For $50 I would definitely do it. I like to fry food sometimes and it is far easier to wipe down 2 sq feet of grill that gets splattered vs the entire kitchen stove, countertop, floor etc... And you keep the smell outdoors. I like to fry fresh peppers sometimes, but their internal water content means they splash hot oil everywhere. Come to think about it, the only thing we fry indoors is bacon, because that smells good.

Yeah...for frying especially. I do french fries & (amazing) homemade chicken nuggets, but it stinks up the kitchen for hours (I don't have external ventilation in there, either).

I bought a Weber (Genesis, I think) on Craigslist for $200. Worth it.

Thanks all. I'll take the plunge on the E320 with the side burner then. Excited. It's been years since I've used a propane grill.

I use our side burner. I do some cast iron cooking and it's pretty much impossible to avoid smoke with those - so I do it outside. Our smoke alarms are way too sensitive.
