dunno if a similar question has been asked before, but I want to get my smaller brother a Christmas present and I'm not sure what to buy: Playstation2 or Xbox? I don't play console games so I'm not quite sure what's better... advantages/disadvantages of both? which one should I get for him? Thanks!

Easiest way to decide... clevery ask your brother which one he would choose. Tell him a friend of yours is having trouble deciding.

This way you'll already know what he would rather have...

Get him a Gamecube, then spend the 100 bucks you saved on two more games. I have one and I am having WAY more fun than on my friend's XBox or my brother's PS2... Pikmin rules!

PS2= Lots more games, not all classics
X-Box=Best hardware available out now for console.

I say GAMECUBE!!!!

j/k, between the two you listed I'd get PS2 gecause of MGS2 and GT3. X-Box just doesnt have anything I really like other than Halo but FPS's need mouse & keyboard for me, your bro might be different though. I wonder how long before people start crying about "Not another console vs. console" at the same time bumping it to the top

For the last time:

If you have a speedy PC, it makes more sence to get a PS2 as it will give you access to playing more games. A lot of the XBOX games will be on PC (and vice-versa)

PS2 is the one. Gran Turismo 3 (and future versions) anyone?

Xbox. It is just fun.
Hey, I have a 1.3GHZ oc to 1.4GHZ with a Geforce 3 ti 200 oc 220/475 (I have 4 nvidia cards + the nvidia xbox chip)and there is something just fun about playing a console. I'm a hardcore computer user but Project Gotham Racing wastes more hours for me than my computer as of late. Scary thought!

two words and a number... Final Fantasy X :Q

PS2 has the advantage of a much better game library...

XBox my have the more recent Intel & nVidia crap hardware, but look back at all the other consoles that had "the best hardware" and a poor game library and see what that got them...

I would get him a ps2 over a xbox any day. More games, and better games.
I personally don?t see a future in the xbox. And buying one would seem like a dead end.

If you had the choice I would get him a gamecube though. It has some great games right now, and many more to come. To me it also seems to have a brighter future than either the Xbox or the PS2

But my finally conclusion is that you need to do what BreakApart said and just find out from him.

so you are saying that:
1) PS2: older hardware, but better game library
2) XBox: better hardware, but no future
3) GameCube: better hardware and a possible future

... I asked my brother about this and I don't think he really knows the difference between all of these consoles; lol, I think he wants all of them. As far as I know (I'm home for only about 2/12 months) he mostly plays computer games, mainly strategy and role-playing, but he also plays some car racing (Need for Speed, etc.).

Xbox.

Having the best hardware and MS behind it guarantees a great future for it, and also attracts game companies. Yes, PS2 has better games right now, and I'd probably get that if you can afford to buy another console in 6 months to a year, but if that's not what you intend to do, go with Xbox.

PS2 is more than a year older than Xbox, so of course it'll have more games. Its library was also extremely crappy when it was released, and it took almost a year to get games worth buying. Xbox is 5 weeks old, many more good games will eventually come out...

Woah woah woah, calm down. You are right I didnt read the main thread, but then again Tomek does not say that his smaller brother doesnt have access to a PC.

The advantages and disadvantages I listed are still relevant.

Right now the choice is obvious. PS2. Why? First you CAN get it, pretty much in stock everywhere. Second, backwards compatible with PS One...important if your brother has one. Third and most important, PS2 by far has a better selection of games at this time.

Tomek you hit it right on the nail. That is my summation of the future consoles.

MS backing something does not mean it will succeed. I don?t see any great developer following that they are getting. I believe that the PS2 has more developers than MS. There are more reasons to develop for it right now. Well, not necessarily more but better ones. Like they have a huge installed base. They have poured money into development for it and it would be a waist to drop it now.

The PS2 and XBox are fighting for the same space. The older people that just follow trends and or hype of a system and get it. Not every one is that way but most. Then the people looking for games that are more toward the older audience. They don?t look to Nintendo just because of all the children games that come out for there systems. Even though there are many more that came out for the psx. They were just not a huge hit like Nintendo had with pokemon etc.

Nintendo baking a system is more of a significance than MS. Don?t tell me that MS is a huge company and can pour money into the XBox. Nintendo is larger than Sony or MS.
Nintendo has been and will be known for making great games. Nintendo's first party is the best around and looks to be staying that way.
Nintendo didn?t have the third party support on the N64 because of two main reasons.
1. Very hard to program for.
2. Expensive medium for games. The cartridges were not cheap and cut profit.
They have fixed both of these problems in the Gamecube. Its now easy to program for and the medium is now cheap and easy to make.
Now many developers are working with the Gamecube.

My prediction is you will start to see the xbox making games as graphically stunning as the system and do. But the quality of the game play will be gone, and the games will not be worth the medium they are put on.

[Addition]
The release games for the PS2 were horrible. Extremely bad if you ask me. But that is because of a simple reason. It was amazingly hard to program for and the developers had not got the hang of it yet.
The Xbox on the other had should not have nearly as bad of a problem. They are using close to standard PC hardware and a modified version of directx, so it should be very easy to program for.
One more thing, they controller of the Xbox is horrific. I know I will get ripped for saying it. It has been said so many times before. But this is a very justifiable problem.
1. Controller is just to big.
2. Doesn?t fit your had. Very odd shaped.
3. The joystick has a indent on the top. No normal thumb would fit that.
4. The second joystick is better than the first. (i.e. the main on and the other one.)
5. When holding the joystick the R and L button are slanted but at wrong angles to your fingers. (I don?t know if it is R and L but the triggers.)
6. The buttons are in a triangle that is smashed together. Then they are rounded off and do not have enough travel to them. With such a large over all size you have a hard time even comfortable reaching the buttons let alone not fat thumbing the wrong one.

I played halo for about an hour at gamestop, and my thumb started itching and then going numb. You may be thinking, he played it standing up in a store for an hour! He must like it. Well not exactly I like to think I give all the systems a fair chance. I give them as much time as I can. I didn?t like the PS2 at all, at first. But once I got to play a good game for an hour on it my hates started going away and only the justifiable ones stayed. I have given the xbox a chance and it is just a monstrosity.

personally if i could have only one i'd buy gamecube w/o a doubt.

msft has bigger plans than xbox, and really i think it would be wise to wait on that front, as more full featured products from msft that run xbox games are just around the corner.

That was a good read RemyCanad. I've been arguing with myself about wether to by the PS2 or something else. Since I mostly play RPG's and Racing games and I already have a PSX and PSOne I think it looks like the PS2 is for me.
The X-Box hasn't come out over here yet so I haven't had a chance to try it, but if I had the opportunity I don't like the idea of giving all that money to M$.

ugh, tip #1, disregard the opinion of anyone willing to stand playing in a store for an hour

thanks RemyCanad, that was very interesting... Nefrodite, I think that RemyCanad might have been referring to my brother, and since he probably doesn't care which console he gets as long as he gets one, then I guess his opinion doesn't matter that much... well, he's not paying for it, lucky bastard

Tough choice. If its strictly between the two, I'll take the X-box by a slim margin. The graphics are simply better than PS2 and it won't be long before X-box
ramps up its game library since its much easier to program to than the PS2.

Personally, I'll buy the Gamecube, its $100 cheaper and the graphics are just as good as the X-box.

Gamecube Controller = awesome

third party GameCube Controller = God.

Interact SuperPad. $20 per... I got three of them in addition to the one that came with the GC... cost me $60 instead of $105
