How much money did Sony funnel to Nvidia to develop the RSX? They might be pretty peeved that Nvidia refined the design they gave Sony and released something faster on a competing market. On the other hand, how can Sony expect Nvidia to sit on the laurels for 12 months?

Personally, I still believe in the PC, always will. Its an industry that lends itself better to high performance hardware due to the cut throat competition.

Oh yeah. I mean, we all knew all along that was going to be the case. But now, from the horse's mouth.

And the prospect of banning nVidia from keep developing their video cards is outright ludicrous, I would say. That would be a pretty crappy deal, even what with the PS3 sales. ATi wouldn't have any competition at all, it would be like the 700-800 line was released and the GF6 line never happened. Unthinkable.


I still just might get me one of the new consoles. But the games better be good.

most gmaing pc's now are going to look the same as a ps3 or better. they just got to 256 bit cores when pcs had that for a long time. I looked at the specs of the xbox 360 which is supposed to be the best in graphics, and its card only had a 500 polygons persecond performance. the x800 and 6800 have higher.

first off your wrong consels are trying to be pcs not consel trying to be pcs where fcuk you get your info in sept or whenever the g70 rolls around there will be diff thoughts,and concels are for the birds ,I really would rather play sega anyday over ps3,I leave my pc to play games,not a concel "wanna be pc" aka striped pc.the people who favor pcs are the people who know how to use them and the poeple favoring concels are people who cant get a video card for there old heap of shite and then they bash the pc.

Console never are as good as a PC for FPS games esp, ok this new tech looks high and mighty for now, but soon it will be the norm, i mind when a G Force 2 GTS Ultra seems the dogs bollocks, now its nothing but old tech.
By the time the P.S 3 is for sale outside Japan, the G70 will have a newer revision or card for PC cause it saying it may be late 2005 or even early 2006 b4 we see it in UK.

I never owned or never will own a console, i have 3 pals that will buy them all though, but wont spend cash on their crappy PC's, then they complain they cant game on them, and rush out and buy expensive console games although only 3 per year, bit of a rip of where the hardware is subsidsed and cash made on software aint it.

Aside from FPS's, PC's are good for CRPG's (e.g. Baldur's Gate), strategy games of different kinds, manager games, Sim/Tycoon type games and so on.

Easy "IRL" multiplayer? Console. "vs." type fighting games (Tekken), beat'em up (Double Dragon), manual control sports games, various other types.

I hope the beefy specs of the next generation consoles will make it more possible for inter console-PC multiplayer.

No need to argue which is better really, they each have their strengths. Personally I play my RPG's and sports games on consoles, and my FPS and RTS games on PC. Each has their strengths in those genres.

The last console ship with wayyy cheaper card than what was available at the time for PC.

The PS3 ATM receive the BIGGEST CHIP available on the market for videogame developing.

They are a step ahead , not like the past with old console( like xbox with their old geforce 3 custom )

This discussion is a bit ludicrous if you ask me. Is it really even a contest? PCs are so much more versatile, and not just with games. I have yet to see the console system that allows me to send and receive e-mails, work on Word documents or Excel spreadsheets, pay bills online, enhance photographs, archive data, etc., etc., etc. Plus PCs can always be upgraded when you need better performance without having to buy an entirely new rig. There is really no comparison between the two at all.

So when will PCs catch up? The console vs. PC debate has always been a balance, consoles would always debut more powerful than PCs, then PCs would catch up and surpass consoles during their ~5 year lifespan. The difference this time around is that the desktop CPU industry is going through a big of a transitional period, it may take a little longer than usual for desktop CPUs to be able to outclass (in all areas) their console counterparts. As far as GPUs go, by the end of this year I'd expect to see 360 and PS3 class (or faster) GPUs offered for high end PCs. By the time the PS3 is released, I would say that the upper mid range GPUs will offer similar (or very close) performance.

The truly limiting factor will be the transition to 65nm on the desktop, the faster that can happen, the quicker the PC will regain its power advantage. We already know the G70 spec for a PC is probably higher than the underclocked console and since P.S3 wont see light of day in UK till late 2005/early 2006 a PC will have a fully fledged G70 by then i would hope.

Nvidia and ATI said they wouldnt again mess up with the top flagship cards been not avail for 6-10months like last ballsup, took me from aprils launch 2004 till novemeber 2004 to get the 6800U i wanted, wish i had held of now.

Looking at the PS3 and Nvidias comments. I bet there will be a more powerful GPU on a PC next year. However it may not be able to do as much as the PS3 due to the limitations in the PC itself.

As long as the PS3 gpu is as good or better than the xbox360 gpu, I'll be happy. I'm not a fan of Nvidia, but I do plan on getting the PS3 to replace my PS2, and if Nvidia screws it up, especially having half a year more time to relesase it after the xbox360, I'm gonna be :|

If you are happy with your PS2, why would you care? The PS2 is easily outclassed by both the GC and XBox as far as graphics go- but it doesn't change all of the advantages it has. That said- reading all the specs that we know I don't think you will have a lot to worry about.

I'm a PC gamer primarily but I am starting to get extremely sick of having to upgrade my hardware everytime a new, technologically superior game gets released because the developer doesn't want to take the extra effort to optimize their games (EQ2, Doom3 anyone?). PC gaming is a money sink if you want to play the games the way the developer wants you to play them. I'm also getting tired of the MMO craze already and I'm welcoming the ability to play very immersive games on my 42" panny plasma via a next gen console. As for FPS, the Halo series was great so FPS can be done well on console. We'll just have to see how well HL2, D3, BF and other popular shooters will translate. As for console hardware, I think Sony and MS are going to surprise everyone with the power of their consoles. I'm lucky enough to have a birds eye view of a few games in development and I am awed at the LOD, IQ, AI, FX and environments on the new shiz...

IMO I actually thought the MetroidPrime titles overall were better for single player experience.
