1 - Check what version of firmware you have. A long time ago, Sony locked the proccessor lower than it's potential, presumably to save battery life (266mhz from 333mhz).
If you have lower than 3.5 firmware, you can upgrade your firmware to increase it's speed.

To check, go to the homescreen, think you go to the menu all the way to the left (system settings?) and then scroll down to System information. The software version is the firmware.
2 - Just FYI, if your son's PSP is the oldest (fat, 1000), it has half the internal memory (32MB vs 64
MB of RAM) as opposed to the newer ones.
I haven't actually installed this as I don't like browsing on my PSP, but there is a homebrew app that sounds good.

Note that he needs to have hacked your PSP to do this.
BTW, that is a great site to download a lot of custom games, applications, utilityes, and uh... obtain backups for your games as well. :X

Got bored the other day. Picked up my son's psp and connected it to my wireless router. This thing is so slow. Anyway to speed it up? Are there any different browsers for a psp?
