I don't play my DS Lite much and was thinking about trading it for a PSP since I've never owned one. Is it worth it nowadays or does it still lack in games? Any good RPG's?

Yes. The PSP has nothing if not great RPGs. Jeanne D'Arc, Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, FF I & II, and so on.

I think the PSP is also good for other things as well. Look at the PS3 vs the Wii in terms of what they can do and it's kind of similar to the PSP vs the DS. The DS can do some of the extras via purchased not-so-Nintendo-backed items.

Also, if you're a fan of Final Fantasy, FFVII Crisis Core is coming out in March.

Plus this one coming out later this month..

I love my PSP, but I only game on it about %30 of the time. The rest is watching movies & listening to O&A & Stern shows on MP3..

is there a big difference in the original PSP and the Slim? The guy is offering a original launch PSP. Do Launch PSP's tend to have more issues?

The PSP has a very strong homebrew community and lot of cool hacks out for it.. You can do a lot with the custom firmwares.. Even get games for free -- which I don't encourage..

The "slim" psp has more ram -- and some newer games supposedly run slightly smoother with it..

But the old fat psp's are easier to hack and install custom firmwares..

he is offering one with a 1.5 firmware. Said he barely played it. But are launch systems prone to dieing or was they solid from the get go? What is needed to flash a 1.5 firmware or is that already custom(newb to PSP's).

I have never heard of a PSP "dying." As far as I know they were reliable from the beginning. But it is possible to "brick" your PSP when installing a firmware. If it is bricked it won't turn on and you can't do anything with it..

There is a 1.5 original sony firmware and a 1.5 custom firmware. The 1.5 firmware is very popular with the homebrew community because a lot of hacks were designed specifically for it..

I just started playing Patapon--very cool, unique game. I'll post something about it soon as well as discuss it on the podcast.

I really do love both my handhelds--the DS and PSP. Some in this thread mentioned some good games and points. It's a great system and movie player. I just picked up a 2GB mem card for $35 off Newegg.

Oh I should add that the new games require certain firmwares to play them.. And if you do brick your PSP you can usually unbrick it with a process that is similar to flashing the firmware..

Unless you're getting a great deal on it, just go with a new Slim. The hardware advantages are clearly apparent, and any model/firmware can be hacked these days.

Hacking will require a special tool or a friend with another hacked PSP.

I LOVE my PSP. I play a few games on it, but I mainly use it for movie watching on the go, and music listening. WAAAAY better than using a laptop for those things.

The older PSP's have some control issues. The early ones had issues with the D pad not recognizing every direction correctly, and the Square button(I believe) being harder to use.

I would go with the Slim

I have a day of release PSP and never had issues with it at all. My only issue now is that I dont play it at all anymore. Anyway, I know a couple of people who have the newer slim ones and they complain about cracked screens.

The novelty of the PSP quickly wore off on me. It was constantly being hacked with homebrew games and firmware, but it still wasn't enough and I ended up selling it. I didn't like the majority of the games, they were all too expensive for a portable IMO, and the screen was too blurry to enjoy a movie or anything of that nature. I had a SNES emulator on it which got more use than the PSP games but it still wasn't enough.

Just that some are easier to hack than others.
And 1.5 is super easy

No. If you don't play your DS much, I doubt you'll play your PSP much. Especially since it's even bigger and less convenient to carry around.

That depends on why he stopped playing the DS. If it was just because of the kinds of games, the two platforms have pretty different offerings.

I really need to get Patapon. It looks so fun and is exactly the kind of game I want for a PSP... though the lack of a pause menu during a mission is slightly upsetting. But $20 and, with what people have described as possible 10-20 hours of gameplay first time though... that's a very good dollar/hour value.

now someone needs to come with a homebrew version of Frequency for the PSP, since Harmonix seems to want to avoid it (damn you iPod! You don't deserve Phase!).

YES! I haven't touched my DS since I got my PSP. I actually wanted to play Apollo Justice, but I simply have to many PSP games to beat first.
