Yeah, they're worth owning.
There are loads of awesome games and we'll be getting FFVII:Crisis Core soon (March 25th in NA). And then there's the masses of homebrew apps (iR Shell, PSPComic, PSPRadio, Snes9xTYL, etc.), and POPS (the PSX emulator).
And of course it's great for listening to music, watching videos.
My favourite game at the moment is WipEout Pulse. Intense racing game with a great soundtrack (IMO), excellent graphics, online play.
I don't think the launch PSPs had any major issues besides the dead pixel thing. I've had mine since launch and not had any problems at all with buttons, etc. (and I've used it a LOT).
As for classic versus slim, besides the size & weight difference, it basically comes down to: classic has an IR port (slim doesn't), slim has 2x the RAM (allowing it to run Skype) & TV-out.
