PSU Problems

I just build a new system, brand new 520W 24 pin psu, check all my cables and reseated all componants, but when i power it up it will run 3-5 sec, then shut down, no post, only thing in is video card, memory and HD.

AsusP5GD2 MB
P4 3.4 775
ati x700 video card, seagate
300gig 7200.8 hd
corsair ddr2 533 memory

any suggestions, or any more info needed to make an educated guess(sorry no multi-meter to manualy test voltages, PSU and CPU fans both power up.

Any input would be appreciated

hi, what psu is it?

check that if the board has a slot for the cpu [4pin] power, then plug that in, same as extra power for the vga.
could try resetting bios, make sure computer is unplugged whilst doing this.

generic(AAthe power) 520W PSU, tripled check and will check the connections again, no extra VGA power(PCIX16 card) computers off, and unsing appropriate Electrostatic(pad and wrist) precautions

try another psu.

cheap psu's are the root of all evil. especially ones with high numbers.
try something like TAGAN 480,
some would say Antec, some might also say Enermax

a good psu doesn't just supply power, it also acts like a bit of a filter, and stops minor surges going through to the mobo/cpu etc.

think it could be anything else, don't want to run strait back to the store before i rule out any other possibilities

sorry can't be more help.

but if that problem with your psu was to show up, first thing i would do is suspect the psu - BUT, if i had other bits to swap around, i would try that first.

...before you explore new PSU's...

1) try clearing the cmos as suggested
2) doublecheck the seating of the video card...
3) same with the memory...
4) if running more than 1 stick .. try with just 1
5) Make sure heat sink is mounted correctly.. otherwise it make have some type of thermal connection shutoff ...
6) make sure board is not shorting out against the case... Do this by running with just the 1 stick of memory, video card & monitor, and processor .. along with PSU.. and take the board out of the case and see if it posts...

tried the above(from all post and still have the same problem, and i did get a new PSU, same thing, seem's like somethings triping it to shut off(just a suspicion/hunch) any suggestions at this point(before i get the sledgehammer)

did you try 6 in mlc's suggestion as well?

the only other thing i can suggest is checking the header connections,
then swapping, one at a time,
ram
vga
cpu
mobo

yes, did # 6 too, i'm realitivly new at building systems(4th one i've done) and not exactly sure what you mean by check the header connections, btw, thanks for all the input, its about the only think keeping me from loosing my mind

the wires that come from the case to the mobo -
ie,
reset sw
pwr sw
hddled
audio cable [for case speaker]
pwrled

if you have the manual, you can pull them all off except the pwrsw, and the case speaker [so you can tell us how many beeps you here, and whether they are short or long beeps]

ASUS has been know to ship boards with weak batteries... you can test with a voltmeter (i think its a 3v battery)...

also .. check the back of the PSU and make sure the slide switch (if u have one) is in the correct position

I'm afraid that if you have done all the above [all the suggestions], then you are going to have to start swapping out bits.

this happened to me once a while back.. I was using the old Volcano 9 hs/fan... The fan had a neat sensor system that gets mounted under the processor.. and would vary the fan speed based on the temperature... well after I upgraded my processor one time I ran into a similar problem... fans would spin for a few seconds.. then everything shut down... turned out that it was the sensor shorting out under the processor..

... so with that anecdote.. my gut says it's something shorting out.... either the board against the case, processor incorrectly seated, (or heatsink).. or some other type of cable or jumper ..

.. assume u did check that battery.. right ?

battery i did, but not sure of what reading was, it gave me one so i wen't with it assuming some charge, board is out of case, so not grounding out, could be something like you said, temp sensor, but how to figure that out is my next quest, i'd likeot rule everything out before i dump another 200 on mobo or 500 on a new chip, any suggestions on how to test? don't have a multimeter at the moment(gave back the one i borrowed)

not thoroughly, check for charge, didn't check if adiquite(don't have multimeter atm just gave it back, did find something, when i looen the heatsink and fan it will run and not shut off, but still won't post, i'm hoping that isn't a bad processor.

thanks for all the help folks, found out that with the asus board they have this vacal bios, listed the system failed CPU test, call asus tech support, the board(P5GD2-delux) bios 1001 dows not support the 3.6 P4 chip, updating the bios should fix the problem(need 1002 or better), wanted to follow up the post in case anyone else has the same problem. Thanks again
