PSUs for dx10?

I've read that future directX10 video cards will be power hogs. I was looking at the 500W Enermax Liberty(I think this is quality stuff) and I was wondering if it'll be enough for an upgrade. Roughly 2 years down the road I'll probably do the switch to Vista/DX10 and I don't want to have to change the PSU along with the next video card.

Well, I would worry if you wanted to do SLi dx10, but I think you should be fine if you're planning on an 8900gt or something. The liberty 500w has 32amps on the 12v rails if I remember correctly, so you should be golden for single gpu setups. Unless of course you have dual fx62's oced to 4.0 with peltier cooling and 10 hard drives, but I get the feeling you don't...

A Corsair HX520W should handle all DX10 single card setups and low/mid-end SLi/Crossfire. If your planning anything really high-end, play it safe with something that has a little more power. Corsair HX620W for example.

Thanks, it's good to know. And no, lol, I don't have that setup. I'm going for an E6400 and a X1900GT(maybe X1900XT 256Mb).

In about 2 weeks the x1950 pro is scheduled to come out. It is supposed to top everything below a 7950gt so it will probably be near the performance of a x1900xt 256mb with a superior (one slot) cooler.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I also thought ATI and nVidia were going to try and reduce the power needed for their next gen GPUs (after the G80 gen) much like Intel just did.

I never gave DX10 requirements thoughts on card consumption, so how much more will 2x 7900 GTs be with SLI in Vista, anyone really know at this point?

speculation will make you waste your $$$$. get a decent psu now for $50 and then when you actually build this rig in 2yrs get whatever is needed because more than likely they will have another connector that your current, no matter how much you spend now, psu won't have.

i don't even speculate 6mos down the road for computer equipment, you would need be crazy to try to speculate 2yrs.

The first generation of DX10 cards are supposed to use ~300 watts. The good thing is that they're also supposed to be coming with their own external power supplies.

One rumor is that the DirectX 10 cards will run using 100w more than current high end cards. Now, thats just a rumor so take it with a grain of salt. But if true running dual DirectX 10 cards will require 200w more than current high end SLI/CrossFire setups? 200w is siginificant. Again, this is rumor. We'll have to wait for reviews to be sure.

Its a pretty credible rumor since its known they havent taken steps to reduce power consumption on the generation thats coming out next.

They better
1. Work with a 550watt PSU
or
2. Come with their own PSU

No thanks.

Sheesh no kidding.

Taking my GameRig into accont that is in my SIG, it's a SLI box with 2x 7900 GTs, and the way it's being said here, that sounds like it would need a 800W-900W PSU, hmm.

Thats why we're seeing more 1Kw psu units coming to market now. The industry is seeing the near future.

That doesn't seem to make good business sense since you'd be forcing people to upgrade both their PSU and Vcard and less people are likely to do that. Why force customers away?

It also doesn't make a lot of sense for the standpoint of the silicon based on what we are seeing out of the CPU's. Why would GPU's be so much different?

There is no reason a video card needs that much power. My spare PC with a 2.2GHZ AthlonXP, 3GB of ram and two hard drives runs off a 240 watt PSU.

The video card industry needs to get a handle on their power utilization.
