Our new Puppy is about 9 weeks old and at times is incredibly defiant and even psycho.

He gets into frenzies where he runs around biting EVERYTHING and doesn't respond to corrections no matter how firm. I even held him down in his back and he fought me for over a minute.

He can be sweet and gentle and unbelievably cute, but these frenzies are really hard to deal with.

Is this a natural phase or should I be looking for a priest to perform an exorcism?

He's a puppy, he's playing. Wait and see how he acts after he's fixed before you call the priest.

That's a very cute puppy. As for the biting and running around, I would say that it's pretty normal. I mean, he's only 9 weeks old so I'm sure he wants to play all of the time and I know that when I was younger and we had puppies, they would bite EVERYTHING. As for not paying attention to you when you try to correct him, I have no idea.....maybe he thinks you're playing with him or he doesn't quite understand what it means yet. Good luck with him.

I have had both my dogs since they were pups, and at times they seemed like they were on crack and get all wound up.
but he should submit to you, next time you got him on his back growl at him till he submits, This helps establish dominance.
Dog personalitys come in every shape and form. Make sure he has good outlets for all that energy, lots of chew toys and walks.
doesnt hurt to take an obidience class and read a book about dog training, you be surprised at how is easy it is to give a dog the wrong signals and create bad behavior. and always try to buy the best dog food available. Oh and they do mellow with age but it takes a few yrs.
Good luck and have fun with your new puppy.

One more question: When he is playing with us, he always bites. He bites our feet, our pant legs, our hands. He doesn't seem aware that his puppy teeth are as sharp as daggers. We have a couple of puppy books that give conflicting messages. One says "No biting - PERIOD" and that it should be nipped in the bud ASAP. Another one says that it is perfectly normal and he just needs to learn to bite gently. We are trying to follow this at the moment and have found that applying "Momma Dog" tactics work well - you growl at him if he nips and bark if he doesn't stop or bites harder. It is actually hilarious to see him completely stop and lay down when you bark at him.

Nevertheless, when he is in his frenzied state, even this is ineffective. We have pretty much resigned ourselves to pputting him in his crate when he gets out of control.

My puppy has tantrums too.

she would start running from the living room to the front door at incredible speeds and like...stopping short...turn around and repeat.

It gets quite scary sometimes...and i know our carpet's gonna look like crap by like..next week..but i think it's her way of exercising or something.

M - come back over to talk pets. We've all been thru it, can give you some advice... yes it is completely normal.

When Bax was the same age I was ready to return him back - He was hyper, disobedient, damaged the house, etc. But it takes a LOT of patience and soon you will see you have the best dog in the world.

What area of the country do you live in? I highly recommend a good "puppy kindergarten" training from a good trainer if its available in your area (not Petsmart). A good puppy K does not focus on "tricks" like shake hands, etc... but rather teaches you how to establish the "pack order" in your house, early socialization with other dogs and people, potty training, acceptance of grooming and the other basics that will help him be a great social dog.

That said - it does take time and patience.

Puppies bite everything, it's not a big deal. No matter what you do, they'll still bite, just get them good chew toys and in a few months when they start to wind down a little then scold them when they bite because by then they know better.

My dog (half black lab half dalmation) was insane as a puppy. she was off the walls. She'd find dolls and would bite them by the head and then just twist in circles (like what you would do if you grabbed somebody and would just twist in circles really fast) until the heads ripped off and the body would fly into a wall. It was hilarious!

<edit>

I should mention now, 9 years later, I have the most chilled out relaxed dog on the planet. Really social, and only suspicious to people that she doesn't know until we say it's okay, then she immediatly see's them as a friend. Been that way since she was about 2. It's really funny how the pecking order works though. I am the most dominant, followed by my dad, then my mom, then her (the dog) and all my 3 younger brothers are lower on the pecking order then she is.

It's funny walking into a room and having my dog lying on my brothers bed (he's 16). He can say "get off the bed" as much as he wants but she won't even acknowledge him. All I have to do is point my finger off the bed and she'll hop right off. Man I really miss my dog being away at college .

Cute dog.
All canine find their level in the family group. His frenzy is an attempt to communicate how "bad" he is. It will go away when his position is assumed by him. However, you must let him know you are the boss. Put him on his back when he won't listen and growl at him like his mom would. Soon he'll learn that which is expected of him and become the loving pet he wants to be.

I feel a lot better now knowing that he isn't actually demon seed (despite evidence to the contrary...)

LOL Uh, yea, this is definitely normal. Give it about a year, he'll calm down. Make sure you discipline him constantly if he's doing something wrong, but show him love constantly too.

My dog was exactly like that when he was a pup. My mom had a toaster over cover torn by him, I had several shirts ripped by his baby teeth, and he even learned how to jump OVER the baby gates that we'd set up at both sides of our kitchen. Ollie also used to go through the garbage cans when they were accessible and drag trash all over the place.

It's normal - and I'll even go so far as to say it's healthy. My dog eventually mellowed out and is now one of the sweetest, most gentle dogs I know. He got better after about 3 years - but don't let that discourage you, because my family didn't really get into the whole training thing. Most of the time even now, I'll tell my dog to sit, and he'll just turn around and walk away from me.
