Pur or Brita pitcher?

I am looking to purchase a water filtration pitcher. Any recommendations to which brand or other systems?

I've had a Pur fridge tank (3? liter -- bigger than a pitcher) for several years now and it works great. I save at least $100/year over the cheapest bottled water.

The Pur filters also last me 2-3 times as long as they say to use them, but our tap water is decent even before filtering.

I can tell you from personal experience (Our company does water purity testing) that Brita is one of the best filters out there - not that Pur is bad - Brita just did better

Pur > Brita it seems from just basic reading. The 3 stage filter really wins. The cost is $0.25/gallon. That's the same cost as if I go to a water store to buy water...

I'v got a pur fridge tank. also have a pur pitcher. I fill the pitcher then pour the filtered water into the tank for further filtering.

The water from the tap tastes like crap here. If you let the water sit in your glass for a while you'll see what stuff settle out onto the bottom of the glass.

I've got a brita tank thing in the fridge. Picked it up from target over 2 years ago for about ~$25. The water tastes so much better.

We have the same thing.. Brita Ultramax. Here is a link to it on Amazon. Ours came from Target as well.

I've never had shit "settle" at the bottom of a glass of water... either from the city tap water or from well water out in the county.

Water hysteria is idiotic. It absolutely blows my mind how much people spend on water.

I drink from a Brita pitcher because Philadelphia tap water tastes like shit. I don't particularly mind drinking tap water if I have to, but filtered water is much more... tasteless... compared to the metallic shit that comes out of the taps here.

uhhhh... what? is that sarcasm? all thats in those filters is some sort of carbon particles.
Edit, the light just went off above my head, maybe you are talking about buying the carbon powder in bulk and repack the filter with new carbon? I suppose that seems plausible as long as you have a way to reseal the top.

Also, how are people saying that the filters stop working? When the water is refrigerated any off tastes in the water are reduced so even if the filter stopped working somehow how would you know? After sitting in the pitcher the chlorine would have evaporated from the water and the odor would be reduced also.

Maybe you mean they stop working when they get clogged?

Sorry I wasn't more clear. The filter becomes clogged prematurely. Pur says they should last 1-2 months or provide 40 gallons. I'm getting about half that now.

I used to use a Brita pitcher in the dorms... what a pain in the ass it is to fill that up, wait, then fill it more. I just had the faucet filter put in now and I don't know why it took me this many years to think to put one on - left the dorms 9 years ago. It's a godsend.

Gotcha... never experienced that before as the water in my town is excellent and has been for a long time. Never would have even thought of that as a possibility.

As a side note, will britas do anything for lime in the water?

Lastly, we sure get great water from these water pitchers but probably also a dose of Bisphenol A... this subject is new to me... any thoughts on this?
