So I've made a couple of posts now about the art my wife and I have purchased on our travels around the US. The first two pieces were titled Thea which we purchased in California and Cosmic Dusk was purchased in Wisconsin.

This latest piece was purchased in Florida and is unnamed. We were walking through a local art fair in Sarasota when we spotted this piece created by a local artist. He told us it is carved from a single piece of burled Buckeye.

We decided to place it above the fireplace in the living room.

That's fantastic! Your tastes tend to be too modern for me, but I really like that. It's modern, but still has traditional warmth. That could really go either way. It would look right in a wooden ski lodge, or in a big city cocktail lounge.

Pretty sick!! We have no meaningful art in our house. Partially because I can be cheap when it comes to decorations but mainly because I don't have an eye for things. I wish I did though.

We do tend to go for more modern styles but this one just spoke to both of us. It's hard to explain but when we are walking through a gallery or an art fair and we see something that both of us fall for and both of us can agree on a spot in the house were it would fit. We just know it when we see it and we go back two or three times to look at it and it all lines up.

Anyway......I don't know what else to say.

I don't know the first thing about collecting art but I like your taste in art.
We don't either we just buy what looks nice to us. The first piece we bought was at a road side candle store along I-74 just over the Indiana/Illinois border and is was around $125. It's still hanging in the living room 6 years later.

Looks like somebody smashed a Reese's peanut butter cup with a grooved drinking glass. I like it.

This sort of inspires me to start making abstract wood art. I bet you paid a decent amount for it.

I had not looked at it that way before but now that you mention it it kind of does. That's the beauty of art. You can have a hundred people look at the same piece and each one can see something different.

I won't go into details about what we paid for it but when speaking with the artist he freely mentioned how the unfinished piece of Buckeye was around $1000. Then you have his time and materials to turn it into a finished piece like you see.

Price of art is just as subjective as the work itself. Some people will look at the three pieces I've shown everyone and say "He paid how much? What an idiot." while other will say "Yeah, that is inline with what I would spend.".
