As I understand, Core 2 procs aren't really "quad", so to speak...they are dual Core 2 Duos. And the i7 is a true quad core proc.

But I digress...as recently as mid-year '08, the majority of available games will only use one logical CPU core. Some support two cores. While the future may hold that games can utilize more than two cores, that person you know is basically correct for now.

That proc will come in quite handy for video rendering, video and audio encoding, and a few other things that can make wonderful use of multiple cores. But if the machine is exclusively for gaming, your parts are more than simply overkill...

i7 920 is $300 @newegg.
MSI X58 Platinum is $214 @mwave.
HD4870 is about $270 @newegg.
Sonata III is $112 @mwave & directron.
Vista HP64 is $100 @newegg.

Seems like you're paying way too much.

LOL, Thank you!!!

This is the second time I've seen this about Core 2's. I mentioned this in a thread a while back but not as my point, and the thread became this long discussion over the correct use of syntax in my statements.

Seems what I said is more commonly accepted than what the other guy said.

Core i7 is not for someone on a budget.
You can get far more for your money with the 45nm quad cores (if it MUST be quad).

If the person you're building for, is having someone build for them, they won't appreciate a Core i7.
Send them to buy Dell!

I should have been more crystal clear on what I was saying...

Seeing as how Core i7 isn't a simple socket 775 drop-in, it requires much more money to be spent besides the CPU itself.

I understand that the reviews say the Core i7 is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
But considering the price of the total platform upgrade, I still say...
