Q3A on my laptop

I have a Dell w/ 750 mhz, 192 MB, 20 gig and 8mb ATI rage mobility video. I can't run Q3A because I get the : Can't load OpenGL subsystem.
I know people quake on their laptops, but I need help getting over this hurddle.
I downloaded the latest drivers from Dell and it screwed up my resolotion. Max res=1600x1200. New drivers= 1024x 768. New drivers gave the same results.
I lowered the desktop res and color to 640x480 16bit and it didn't help either.

I need to quake while taveling. It's an addiction as some of you know

I don't think I've ever seen Q3 run on a laptop. I've only seen Q and Q2 run in software acceleration mode. If you figure it out, post it here. I've got a Dell laptop and I'd like to know too.

it's a driver problem.
the rage mobility is opengl capable afaik, so maybe it just got fux0red somewhere along the way...
i would uninstall q3, reinstall the drivers, then reinstall q3

Is there any way to get Q3 to run in software render mode or D3D mode like UT can? I don't think I can do the OpenGL with any drivers for that ATI mobility.

q3 is opengl only. no software, no d3d
but i'm positive the rage mobility can do opengl. try the reinstall

The ati mobility on laptops don't support opengl...hence the reason no quake 3...sorry bud it's not going to happen.

That is not true!! I have played Quake3 myself on a gateway solo before. With the same rage mobility card in it. It will work

GDI, don't change your desktop resolution/depth for Quake3. Like other games, it cahnges the mode automatically. Go and find the LATEST drivers for you ATI RM 8Mb. Like I said, I have installed and play Quake3 on my laptop. If you get the right drivers, it should work. Good luck. Check what version of DirectX you have installed. Go to Start>run>"Dxdiag">ENTER

It should tell what version you have. Quake3 requires at least version 7.0. 7.0 is on the disk, but with your 750mHz laptop, you should already have 7.0 or higher. Get the right drivers!!

Obviously, on the Rage mobility 8mb, it doesn't run great, but it will work. Definitely, with that little video RAM, after you get the new drivers working properly, when you get into the game, make sure depth is 16bit. Don't try to use 32bit depth. Res. 800x600 MAX if you want smooth performance.

My problem is that I can't get into the game to change the settings like color depth and res. Can I do that in the config file before start the game?

yeah you can edit the config to set the res and color depth, but that's not the problem. resolution problems won't give the "can't load opengl subsystem" error.

but fyi:
open up the q3config.cfg in the /baseq3 directory
it'll look all jacked up and jumbled if you open it up in notepad. DOS edit works fine.
anyway..

look for r_colorbits and r_mode
choose either 16 or 32 for r_colorbits

for r_mode these are what the values mean:
settings for r_mode
//-1=Custom (see r_customaspect)
//0=320x240
//1=400x300
//2=512x384
//3=640x480
//4=800x600
//5=960x720
//6=1024x768
//7=1152x864
//8=1280x1024
//9=1600x1200
//10=2048x1536
//11=856x480

r_customaspect is to set your own non standard resolutions..
you set r_customaspect to 1 then you gotta set the height and width parameters:
r_customwidth and r_customheight in terms of number of pixels.


but like i said, this shouldn't be the problem you're having. SAK was just making some suggestions on how to make it run better, once you have it up..

Make sure that you download the drivers that have opengl support, they actually have gl in the driver name I believe. I know you can play it, because I played Q3 and Counterstrike on my old p2-333 with 128 megs and the 8meg rage pro or whatever the chip before the mobility was. All I know is I will never buy a laptop again unless it has a decent video card, I am talking NV11 or greater.
