Yes, for certain tasks, it will be much, much faster. For others, it will be slower.

I spent the day backing up my systemand moving pictures, videos to other drives on my system 4 other drives, and my system is completly unusable when moving files from one drive to another with 6300@2.9. I mean i cant even bring up Email, I am guessing a quad does not have this trouble?

That has nothing to do with how many cores your processor has. Whenever you're using your C: drive for something disk-intensive, like copying files, that's going to happen with any processor. Or were you just transferring files from disk #2 to disk #3, and not using the drive that Windows is located on?

Your problem, Mustanggt, could be more dependent on your drive transfer and writing speeds.

You should download the DPC (deferred procedure call) program and analyze your system to see if you have a DPC issue.

Long ago on a P4 system I installed a wireless lan card (years ago) and the driver for the Netgear wireless lan card caused massive amounts of DPC's intermittently which would make my system (even with HT enabled) stutter and stop in fits. That was with raptors as well.

DPC Latency Checker

Checking DPC has become all the rage lately thanks to some seriously underperforming $100 mobo's out there, notably made by Gigabyte if the forum reports are anything to go by.

i guess that's why people sometimes put their OS on the C drive
and their ap. files on another drive ?

i thought that upgrading to a Conroe would allow a disk transfer to
go in the background, maybe on one processor. it helps, but it's
not enough.

sort of how a SCSI adapter acts as a disk-I/O co-processor.
one core for Disk I/O, one core left over to continue on other
tasks.

Did you defrag before you moved the files? How much ram do you have? Consider moving (or splitting) your page file to your second fast drive.

Try doing your major file transfers and backups in safe mode and see how much that improves performance.

edit: Drive performance starts to tank when you get above 65% capacity. Was your OS drive full when you began the transfers?

.

All of what you wrote is true, and in fact it does happen when you >1 core, but none if it helps when "the other tasks" are also stalled and waiting in queue for data to come off the hard-drives.

This is where SSD's bring real value to the desktop consumer. It's not about power savings or bandwidth on the desktop segment, it's about latency and IOPS.
