Quake 4 settings questions...

The problem i'm having is "hitching" or stuttering briefly when doors open.

I'd like to keep the current game settings and minimize or eliminate the hitching/stuttering problem.

I'm using all settings maxed including Ultra quality. (I know that a lot of people would say to just not use Ultra quality, but i'm trying to keep that setting). I'm playing at 1900x1200 or 1600x1200. (the hitching occurs on both resolutions).

My system:

Athlon 64 x2 4400, 2x geforce 7900gtx, 2 gigs ram, 1 raptor 74 gig.

I'm aware of the cache tweaks:

image_useCache [0,1]
image_cacheMegs [Megabytes]
image_cacheMinK [KiloBytes]

I used the settings found at tweakguides.com for these 3 and the problem was better but then when one level loaded there was nothing on my screen. I think that with the correct cachemegs and cachemink all would work well.

So, i'm looking for suggestions for what to use for the second 2 tweeks based on my system specs. If someone else here has a similar system and was able to get rid of the hitching let me know what cache tweak settings you used. Of if you changed some other setting to get rid of the problem let me know.

the ultra textures are the same as the other high textures only they are not compressed.. the quality gain is there are no compression articfacts.. the down side is the extra loading times as the larger texures are moved about.. there is always a very slight delay as new texturesa are moved from system to card memory.. the larger uncompressed textures simply make this delay more noticable.. i never used them for this very reason.. the quality gain from useing the uncompressed textures isnt exactly noticable.. ??

i know folks with top end systems like to think they can play all games with everthing maxed out.. but with some of todays games u cant.. not without paying a price somewhere along the line.. sorry i aint being that helpfull.. but i think i am being realistic.. he he

You should be able to run it at ultra settings, i remember my friend had a 6800ultra 512mb when that came out and i played it at his house, for the most party it was really smooth but nothing like you describe. Sry i cant be more of a help to you, just telling you what ive seen a lesser high end rig do.

Dual-core issues? Try disabling nVidia's dual-core driver optimizations.

ultra quality instead of high? have you actually ever compared the two? seriously. take some screenshots. it looks the same.
