i see Sandisk is marketing their Extreme IV CFs, and I thought the Etreme III was plenty fast already. Obviously, the Extreme 4 commands a higher permium than the III. So, I would beg to question, is it worth it? Personally, I don't plan to do Paparazzi-style, shutter-happy type shooting, but I do want to use RAW mode on my Olympus 410)

(right now I have a regular 512mg Sandisk CF and an 340mb IBM Microdrive.)

you probably can't tell the difference between III and IV with that camera. maybe if you stop watch a 100 frame burst you could tell a difference, but maybe not.

Extreme IV is prohibtively expensive. so I am thinking whether to pay a few bucks more for the Extreme III over the II or the plain regulars.

(I asked other friends on IM, two of them said it's doesn't matter, since the buffer within camera should be capable of handling them. That's unless if I do burst mode, which I don't think I will do)

A-Data 60x 8GB CF $33 shipped Frys.com, no rebate.

Works great in my D300.

It depends on the camera. You E410 probably won't tell the difference between a Sandisk UltraII, ExtremeIII, or ExtremeIV (I know my D50 doesn't). Only the high-end pro bodies from the last few years and the latest midrange cameras have memory controllers that are fast enough to outrun the ExtremeIII and comparable speed cards.

Interesting that the Nikons are consistently least faster (often significantly) there, at least looking at the 1DS Mk3, the D2Xs, the 30D, the D200 & the D80 (I got bored after finding out that my D80 could have utilised a much faster card At least I've only used continuous shooting about once since I got it, and there's a six frame buffer using RAW before I hit the skids...)

I was at a local photo show and was told by the SanDisk people that I would see no benefits from using Extreme IV. I picked up two Extreme III 4gb cards for $35 AR and they work great. I got a 4GB Transcend 4GB a few a year ago for like $40, but the egg went way up on price.

The Oly e410 has a max fps of 3, @ 10mp resolution, which is on par with the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. In the case of both cameras, Sandisk Ultra II's are going to be plenty fast, especially if you're not going to be using the max fps much. I started out with the XTi and Ultra II's and never had any problems relating to card speed. The only reason I switched to Extreme III's is because I liked to get data off of the cards and onto the computer faster, which is where you'll see the real difference (assuming you have a good CF card reader.) The switch also came in handy after I upgraded to the 40D which can push the Extreme III's pretty close to the max @ 6.5fps.

If card-to-pc speeds don't bother you much, stick to the Ultra II's. They're dirt cheap (Costco has had them on perpetual sale for a while now) they work great and you can put the savings towards new glass, a good tripod, or other misc. accessories.

as of now, the card to pc speeds seems to bug me a little like a splinter on my thumb. Not a horrible long wait, but man, those RAW files are huge. and thanks for the Costco deal, and there's one close by and may pick up a 4 gig.
