How big was the down payment on your wife? Was it one month, two months, or three months salary?

DON'T DO IT!!! RUN NOW WHILE YOU STILL HAVE THE CHANCE!!!

If you have not run yet, I spent 2 months worth of paychecks on that damn ring that she now wants to upgrade. $)_&(#QU)($&)!!!!

So is she a total bitch or do you make like 3 dollars an hour?

For my husband it cost him about a day's pay, I would guesstimate (not sure what he was making at the time). Abut $150 for a gold band.

This part I've never fully understood ... At least past the physical, women-like-pretty-shiny-things part. Isn't the ring supposed to be a symbol of your love and commitment and unity and some crap like that to each other?

Then why does it matter how expensive the ring looks? Shouldn't you be happy with a 25 cent ring from the toy machine things in the mall?

We weren't retarded... there was no advance formula for how much the ring had to cost. We both sat down and picked out the one she liked/that I could reasonably afford.

Its also symbol of sacrifice, and women know that man value their money/work very very much. So a guy dropping 10 grand or whatever for marriage is a big gesture to some women.

A 25 cent ring shows no commitment or unity...

The best part of this thread is that I referred to it as a downpayment and every man instantly knew what I was talking about.

uh, I don't know. who measures things in "months of salary"? pre-tax-withholding or post-? how about insurance and 401k?

thinking about it, it was probably about a month net at the time (post-everything). that's just engagement ring; we bought wedding rings together later.

Of course, not. I can still say things like this and get away with it, can't I?

No offense to anyone who has done this, but dropping 10 grand on a ring is dumb.

Hell, my g/f thinks 3 grand is way too much.

I spent a month's worth and she loves it. I'm still waiting to upgrade my band since we got it as sterling silver, but I'm being picky - and will probably wait for my grandparents to pass since my they told me I will be getting one of their diamonds. Probably another 5-10 years, but oh well ... can always have the silver polished and it looks new.

She sure fooled you, its all about bragging rights with the other girls. Look how big my ring is, guess how much he spent?

Her ring was about one month salary for me. Now with that being said, my mother actually helped me out a wee bit.

I think I spent about $1500. That was back in 1995 though, so I'm not sure of the percentage.

Don't go by that percentage crap, go with what you can afford. That percentage rule was made up by jewlers to get you to spend more money. Just like the oil change places made up the "get your oil changed every 3000 miles" and everyone now believes it.

2.5 months back when I was very poor, so we ended up upgrading a bit later on. Same ring, we just adjusted a few things and added some more sparkle.

About 2 months. To each his own but I like her having a nice ring. It will last our whole lives and looks beautiful.
