What happens when a Windows XP computer on a network is powered on and the network server is offline?

is it: The Kerberos system will not allow the computer to connect to the network

If it is unable to find authenitication it will logon locally or use cached credentials (what you had the last time you authenticated to the domain/AD)

One must differentiate between "the network" and 'connecting to another operating system'

The network means you can talk to stuff.

That has little bearing on what resources you can and cannot access.

It would depend a lot on what services the server was providing.

DNS and DHCP can be worked around, obviously if the serer were providing file & print services, then you're SOL.

Kerberos is primarily an (extremely brief description) encrypted authentication system.
