when you first started working, were you expected to hit the ground and run, or did they give you a few weeks/months to get up to speed?

Some good questions there, I'd also like to know. I'm graduating in about 5 months with a degree in Software Engineering, and probably will be entering the work force.

Not in the job force yet or anything, but I've heard software engineering was one of the top 10 jobs to have in the late 90s, based on the criteria of pay, job security, stress, etc. However, with the outsourcing craze, that's probably changed.

well ive been in the same company now for 4 yrs. ive been told its the same where ever i go, id like to think otherwise. =)

my work place is political, slow paced, techinically in the lower to middle area compared to the high tech companies out there, my pay is slightly below or at average, etc...

Ok I'm an Analyst but what the heck

Happy? Yes would like a bit more money.

Stressed? Yes but in a good way if that makes any sense.

Deadlines? Yes but usually reasonable.

Sweatshop? No

Envin slow moving/relaxed? I guess so.

Job off shored? Not a chance. The company has outsource two different projects since I started here and both have been a complete mess.

Minimum politics, lots of hard work

Any thing else to add? Nope.

Due to being self-employed, my answers may be skewed:

are you happy where you are? - yes

are you stressed? have tight deadlines? is it a sweatshop? - No - however have been in such a situation

or, is your work environment slow moving/relax? - current project is an on-going development/tweaking.
As a simulation, requires continual rework, real work target does not exist yet.

do you see your job being offshored? - No - needs to work closely with others in-house

when you first started working, were you expected to hit the ground and run, or did they give you a few weeks/months to get up to speed? - hit the ground running - others have allowed for uptime.

is your work more political vs hard work? - this roject is work - will not take a political project again.

I'm a software engineer and it is my ideal work environment.

Everyone gets an office. Everyone is hard-working and intelligent. Flexible hours, good pay. I can't ask for much more.

big or small company? what happens when you encounter a problem or hold up where you cant progress any longer? are people willing to take time off of their work and assist you? how techinical is your work? im involved in simulation programs written in c++ and java but i wouldnt consider it anywhere near hardcore. can a college graduate with the fundamentals of OO/programming be trained to do what you do?

sometimes we're working like mad; right now it's slower.

do you see your job being offshored? - never, since you need a
security clearance.

appropriate to your background & interests.

is your work more political vs hard work? about 85% hard work.

anything else you would like to add, id appreciate it - the ability to work
in teams is important when you're developing
large, complex systems.
