Questions for 2900 owners

1. What kind of PSU do you have?

2. Do you like the image quality in gaming and in videos?

3. Is it really noisy?

4. Are the drivers good for XP and Vista?

I was going to buy a 8800 GTX, but I couldn't see myself spending $500+ and the price looked like it was never going to drop so I bought the 2900 instead. I've had it for 4 days now and I haven't had any problems at all. I have 9 hard drives in my case so I was a little concerned about power at first, but after doing the actual math on what would be required I was just worrying about nothing.

Anway, to answer your questions:

I haven't noticed anything strange, seems like my X1900XT so I'd say yeah.

No, everything I've read online is an exaggeration. Its not like the stock X1900XT fan or something. I could hear that over everything until I replaced it with a Thermalright HR-03. The only thing I ever hear now is the crossflow fan in my Stacker case so everything else is quieter than that.

Don't know about XP, but everything seems fine to me in Vista. No crashes in any games or Windows yet.

Do you play games other than what have been featured on every review site? How much of a different have you noticed between the X1900XT and the 2900XT.

Well know more about the driver situation in a few days. ATI should be releasing the 7.5 Catalysts this coming week.

I've really just been playing 2 Worlds for the past few days (its basicly an oblivion and gothic 3 ripoff), I dont think anyone ever reviewed that. The problem with that is I never played it on the 1900 so I cant say how different it is. It probably would run fine though on anything decent, the game isn't really all that amazing looking. I'm not really the best person to ask about benchmarks I guess.

1. Hyper 580W PSU.

2. The image quality from reviews state it is better then the 1900 series but I can not tell. My GTX and the 2900 looks the same but with review sites stating the 8800 is better.

3. It beats the 1900 series stock cooler *shrug*. It is warm so keep that in mind.

4. The drivers are great for XP and so so with Vista. In fact I was sent a little asian e-box with new drivers from my friend in taiwan. It increased the performance about 4-15% over my 320mb GTS and in cases such as fear and css it comes close to my GTX. If you would like I can PM you the drivers.

I'm waiting until the next rev of Catalyst is released before I order my 2900 and 2407 panel.

1) Enhance 5150GH
2) Um, coming from a 9600 pro, that's an ecstatic YES (meaning, don't take my opinion on this very seriously)
3) Well, with the computer 4 feet from my bed and side cover off, I can sleep fine. At load though, the fan definitely is loud.
4) No issues with drivers so far

1000w Enermax Galaxy (I know, I know: Overkill! )
My Enermax Liberty 620 from another rig ran it just fine too.

Looks fine to me. Can't honestly tell a difference between that and my X1950XTX I used to have.

More than I'd like. But the fan noise is really refined. It's not annoying at all.

XP Pro 32bit here, haven't had a problem.


I'm extremely happy with performance too. Allows me to run Test Drive Unlimited at 1920x1080 with 4xAA and 16xAF and from rate hangs right around 30-40 FPS. My X1950XTX wasn't very conformable above 1440x810 4xAA 16xAF.

"Refined" is a funny way to describe a fan noise.

I think he means that it's audible, you can hear it if you listen for it and all, but it is not overbearing and so loud that you are distracted by it.

Probably. Some fans make a whining or rattling noise (the bearings?) that is exceptionally irritating. By contrast, the noise that comes from moving a lot of air is very easy to ignore.

I would guess not tons of fan noise, but lots of noise from moving air. At least the reviews tend to say that.
