Defragging can reduce wear and tear on the drive. I would think it's importance would be largely dependent on the drive's use. What would the point be on a drive that has more than half it's contents changed daily or even weekly?

Until you can produce proven benchmarks to this point I continue to waive my almighty BS flag in the air.

You should be the one with the burden of proof, you're the one claiming how important defragging is.

My such emotions over something so trivial...

How about this: If we "believe" defragmenting helps (as I do), we can continue to do it. If we "believe" defragmenting is a waste of time/money, we don't have to!

Problem solved.

Please move the discussion about whether defragmenting helps or not to another thread as this one is about a slightly different topic.

Agreed. There's no convincing case for me to even do it on a semi regular basis. I used to do it religiously during my 386/486 days. Must be the advent of higher performance HDDs nowadays.

The Windows XP defrag is really just a simple version of Diskeeper.

I've noticed a pretty big difference on a severely fragmented drive. I think the defragger reported 75% fragmented or something like that.

Too much dumbass debate about the importance of Defragment. They should not made defragment at first place if they saw no improvement or performance. Enuff said!

Riiiiight. And I bet you have one of those Ram defrag tools installed and that you think a Pentium 4 makes the Internet faster!
