my current setup has HD as primary master and CDRW as secondary slave. there are no other devices.

is this gonna be a problem at all? i dont think it should, but will it be worth my time to open the case and change the jumpers so that the CDRW is set as the secondary Master instead of slave? thx just wondering!

Your CDRW would be much happier on a IDE channel of its own... Do that, you'll notice faster CD rips, decreased installation times,... All you have to do is to move CDRW jumper to "master", dissconnect it from secondary/slave connector on your first IDE channel and install it onto additional IDE HDD/CD cable on your secondary IDE channel. Don't forget to switch your rig off and disconnect it form power outlet before (also touch any grounded metal thing in your room to discharge any static electricity)

Is it a problem..."NO"...is it the prefered setup..."NO"...Put the CDRW on the secondary as Master for the best results.

I've seen a computer that would hang at boot randomly. It turned out it was because the cd rom was slave on its own channel so make it master if there is only one.

The Optical doesn't really give a rat's ass what channel it's on, it's just better to have it on a seperate channel when you are transferring large files. Secondary/master is irrevelant in your setup. CS would work as well.

When using a single drive I would set it to primary, master&slave are politically incorrect evidently, so primary/secondary is the PC way to say it now braddah Just make sure it defaults to the proper DMA value and that you have the latest firmware for the drive as that will make certain things stay as speedy as they can be.

Mine did that when I had both set to CS with a setup like this.

PM: nothing
PS: HDD
SM: Optical
SS: Optical

Spikesoldier, didn't your mother breast-feed you or something? We're all trying to help here, so why don't you just cut it, will you please! Even though some of us did make a mistake and read franguinho's post/question somewhat too fast (I guess we read it like one of many of the same questions), the end result is still the same. At the end of the day--- franguinho - ribbon13's post is what you're after (He's absolutely right about this MA/SL/CS issue)... Your previous setup was exactly the same performance-wise as it is now, except for the fact you won't have any troubles on potentially badly written BIOS update or something alike. Best, Myk

so then we can have a primary primary drive and a secondary primary drive, then also a primary secondary and then of course we couldnt go without the secondary secondary
