I mostly use it for opening apps and files. It's much quicker than Spotlight and usually knows exactly what I'm looking for.

It's the quickest way to open anything. Youtube has a great tutorial about it. It learns your keystrokes and everything. Much faster than moving my mouse down and clicking on Firefox on the dock just by pressing Control+Space and "F" (it now knows that button usually comes up as firefox so it's first choice).

I never could get into the mindframe of using it, but I know that it is one of those either love it or don't sort of things. There are those that swear by Quicksilver and wouldn't use a Mac without it (sort of like me and 2 finger scrolling/secondary clicking) and those that don't care.

I like how it allows me to keep my dock clean. One of my big pet peeves is when people have a gazillion apps on their dock.

I use it mainly as an app launcher. you can do more, but I never have quite understood the benefits. I have found it useful when I need to open documents with other apps that it's not associated with. eg, open an excel file w/ office 2003 in crossover as opposed to the default of office 2008. quite handy.

Same...I think it's a very powerful system that I just need a good tutorial on. I understand the basics of using it as an app/file launcher, but that's about it. I'm perfectly happy with that it does for me though!

One of the few must-have apps imo. I use it for everything, from launching apps to finding documents.

quick finder: invoke quicksilver, keep ~ or / pressed... get to your home/root directory
quick move/copy: invoke quicksilver, find the file you want to move/copy, hit TAB, start typing copy/move, hit TAB, type in destination
clipboard history : invoke quicksilver, hit ?-L... (might have to enable it in preferences)

I'm with you. Actually, not entirely. I barely use both. I use Spotlight for when I need to find something that I cannot remember the name of the file. I leave open most all of the apps that I use all the time anyway and so don't really need something like Quicksilver.

I have recently noticed my desktop has an overcrowded dock, and removed as many non-essential programs as I can. I'll give Quicksilver a go since it seems to be highly regarded by many around here.

Are there other strategies for managing shortcuts to programs? I tried creating a folder on the right side of the dock and manually creating aliases, but this seems cumbersome.

I just hit command space, type a few characters of the app I want and it shows up I press enter and it opens.

My dock is actually empty if nothing is running (well except it shows finder)
