I have a stock headsink/fan on my 1.2 athlon. The fan is clearly the loudest part of my system and I would like to replace it with a quieter model. Can you recommend a heatsink/fan that would deliver about the same cooling power as the stock parts but be much quieter.

Thermalright AX-7 + Panaflo L1a or Enermax 80mm adjustable
Thermalright SK-7 + same (slightly higher cost, much more availability)
SLK-800 + same (overkill)
SLK-900 + same (overkill)

Not overkill if you o-clock.

Can I just replace the stock fan with a quieter fan (panaflow or?). I guess I would need some sort of adapter as the stock fan looks much smaller than 80mm. btw...I am not overclocking.

The SLK-800 with a YS-Tech Silent 80mm (27CFM, 20dBa) is perfect imo. Excellent cooling even if you dont OC.
Theres no such thing is "Overkill" as far as im concerned.

I know what you are going through-I built an AMD 1.1 retail system for my daughter and couldn't stand the high-pitched whine of the retail fan. I replaced it with a similar size fan I had sitting around.

See my thread here for my story of the Thermalright 800A and a Panaflow L1A on an AMD 1.4-short answer is it probably won't cool enough:

Cooling a 1.4

I replaced the panaflow with a regular, generic 80 mm fan and my temps dropped 12-14 degrees. You are probably looking at a total of $15-25 for the parts needed, but it will be worlds better as far as noise and temp.

if all you want is quieter stock cooler then why not just get a spire falconrock2?
it is [a little] better than stock but SILENT and best of all it is about £5 so very cheap too.

rip old fan off by any means required. add low speed panaflow or stealth vantec using screws, superglue, expoxy, velcro, duct tape, whatever. done! its a 1.2ghz, its not worth more effort or money then that.
