Quiet DVD-RW

My current DVD-RW optical sounds like a jet engine when it gets going, so I want a new one. It has to be QUIET. Don't see the point of spending more $$ on a SATA, so IDE is fine.

Dunno what the deal is about DVD-RAM? I mostly use this to burn movies for my kids, watch the occasional movie, and load games/store data.

Suggestions? Thanks.

DVD Drive and Quite :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

By design DVDs are supposed to be revolved at a very high RPM much higher than any other drives optical drives so IT WILL make noise there is no alternative...

Just wondering if it's possible. But I can take a good laugh as best as the next guy. I understand about the speed though, that makes perfect sense.

I guess I should rephrase:

Is there a brand/model that is LESS noisy than the rest?

In my experience LG and Lite On are the loudest, NEC in the middle, and Benq and Samsung the quietest ... though not exactly quiet.

My beef is that every model seems to change completely. I had bought a Benq about a year ago that is super quiet. Of course that model is no longer made (an 8x burner), and a recent 16x Benq is much noisier. Best thing is to look for people's comments on specific models.

If you are worried about it being too loud when you play a movie, some dvd playback programs have an option to limit the speed of the dvd drive, which makes it quieter.

Well, the NEC I have in my rig and the generic lite on in my gateway make pretty much the same noise, which is pretty loud. Samsung makes quiet HDD's, you should check them out.

So far it looks like Samsung is getting good feedback. I'll investigate those further. Thanks!

What about Sony and Pioneer?

I'd just go to silentpcreview and find a way of insulating the sound. All the drives I've used when at max speed are super loud, doubt you can change it since much of the sound as a result of the speed. Alternative, just run Nero drive speed 24/7 and turn it way down.
