I read an article about that. apparently. they weren't shooting at helicopters, they wre just so frustrated by people not coming to pick them up that they were shooting into the air to try to get attention brought to them.

The way people are acting i'm sure is partly because they're losing their minds thinking about what they've lost because they have nothing else to do. What else can you do in an Astrodome filled with 11,000+ people (besides rape them)? People tend toward disorganization just like everything else, and it takes a realization of the whole that it's for their better good to act sanely. When there's no drawback to following your instincts, what do you expect?

No that was another incident i believe... helicopter rescue was suspended temporarily due to what you mentioned, but later resumed...

The incident I was talking about was a group of contractors who were escorted by police were crossing a bridge to fix something. They came under fire by another group of people, and the police returned fire and killed 5 men. This is what I recall from the news stories I read

i use to work near the astrodome and i keep in touch with some of my past cooworkers. they say everything is trashed over there now. The parking lots have trash all over them. and despite a lack of news coverage, businesses have have been robbed (from Fiesta to Sonic). Muggings and fights have also broken out in the area. Most of the businesses are starting to close at 8 instead of 9 because of all of this.

believe what you want. it really doesnt matter to me. im just thankful i was transfered a month or so ago.

Phew. Until I saw this post I thought I was the only one who actually read that.

According to my local morning newspaper, there are 100 uniformed police officers literally patrolling the Astrodome day and night to prevent exactly this sort of thing from happening. And give the fact that this is a load of BS and none of this has actually happened, I'd say they're doing a good job.

until i hear for certain, i'm going to assume that these are nothing more than rumours. my girlfriend and i were working at the astrodome and reliant arena over the weekend. my girlfriend is a clinical pharmacist, and worked in the clinic.

i can attest that there is a huge police presence at the site, as well as hundreds of volunteers. families brought their children to volunteer, and it felt like a pretty controlled environment.

as stated earlier, all major news sites (click2houston (channel 2), khou (channel 11), an ktrh (channel 13), and the houston chronicle) are all reporting that the rumours of rapes adn assaults are nothing more than rumours.

i know a lot of people at the baylor college of medicine, and i will check with them to verify. classes are small, and everyone knows each other - something like this would sperad like wildfire. i'll report back if i find out.

so i heard back from my med student friends from BCM:

student 1 (was volunteering that weekend):
"as far as i know, it's just a rumor. no substantiation of the story. there was a worse rumor: a doctor at the dome got raped. with the kind of police presence i saw when i went there to help, i doubt it. not in the dome at least."

student 2:
"Actually, I haven't heard of anything like this happening. No announcement to this effect has been made, therefore, I'm not sure how credible it is."

so i do not believe the stories of any physicians or med students being assaulted to be true at the moment. here is the latest article on crime around the astrodome from click2houston:

one allegation of sexual assault of a juvenile investigating. so far, 38 arrests. no real elevation in instances of crime, although quite a few public intoxication instances. however, a curfew of 11pm is being implemented to keep noise level down in the area.
