No one forces you to buy it anyway Matt2.

The "real enthusiasts" do have to money for it, and they don't care if it's visually pleasing to look at or not, it's a goddamn hardware product that you won't be looking at when you play a game. And that product isn't made for Mr Joe everyone, it's made for rich folks. Go get a G80 or something instead (I know I myself will have to, I won't have the money for R600).

When Frontlines: Fuel of War, Quake Wars and Crysis are released then I'll think about Vista and DX10 cards. Until then R600 and G80 are useless to me.

Well this is what happens when companies are forced to push the performance envelope to keep up with consumer demand for faster chips every 6-8 months.

8-pin OR 6-pin power connection
Fixed.

would that be dual 6-pin or single 8-pin?

the 8-pin is part of the PCI-Express 2.0 standard

And it can handle 22A?

I'm hoping that the power requirements come down, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well, I guess this proves Jen Hsun-Huang *WAS* correct -- ATi have definitely been toking on the hallucinogens if they believe this will make them competitive once again.

Perhaps a few hard core nutters will purchase this thing, but most will stay far away no matter what performance is on offer.

nvidia's G80 is infinitely more manufacturable, sellable and profitable than this piece of lab engineering gone mad.

Having purchased an 8800GTX, I disagree with you.

If this card compares to the 8800GTX the way the X1900XTX compared to the 7900GTX, than it would be a worthwhile consideration. Remember, the retail version is supposed to be shorter than the OEM one pictured.

It will want to be shorter. And less complex.

Reminds me of nv30 vs nv35 - I think this is the situation ATi find themselves in at the moment - the tech as it stands really isn't ready for public consumption.

Once again most of the comsumers out there really do not care much about performance. You know Commodore was still manufacturing and selling C64's right up until they went bankrupt despite trying several times to kill the C64 off and having machines as powerful as the A1200/A4000 available...

Of course it isn't ready for consumption, that's why it's not for sale yet.

That aside, you are seriously speculating about the merit of ATI's R600 based on a few spy photos... Given their track record with the X1900XTX, the X1800XT (yes, it was late, but it still was a great card), and the X9xx series before that, we have no reason to doubt ATI's ability to develop a fantastic video card.

Like I said, I'm sure the performance will be all that enthusiasts want it to be, but that won't guarantee it success in the market place (just like Rxx - completely dominated by G7x despite its technical merits or the TNT series having to play second fiddle to voodoo 2/3 despite being better).

think the card is actually the same length, just the cooler is on the end.

Actually when I read anything about ati from vrzone - including the 270watt claim. I remember an old Canadian saying. Anything from vrzone about ati is sure to be aeg.

Really I am in wait and see mold, but it does feel like nvidia soiled their pants. Promising monthly drivers and what not.

Keep dreaming...

While everyone has their own opinion... he just acts like his is fact. Saying the 7800GTX dominated the X1900XTX is pretty funny to me. Far from it, imo.

Or I could read this, but not as scientific as valve.

Really what I got from that is gpu companies are in trouble as sales are down and games that actually sell are being designed for wii.

Anyways ati is in the lowering expectations phase, so launch is getting near. Is quite exciting!

See what I mean when I say consumers don't care about performance? You will find this holds true since the dawn of the microcomputer/games console....

WTF Gstandfor?

Can you please not be such a fanboy? It's very unbecoming...

You KNOW that the card in the photo is for system builders but act as if even retail will be the same...

And? What's your point? I could care less if it does good or bad in the market. I'll only care if it does good or bad in my computer.

To be serious I couldn't care less about the length as long as performance, power efficiency and granularity are guaranteed.

That's what she said.

Seriously though, these upgrades are killing me. It started off as a monitor upgrade (want a 24" widescreen). OK, now I need a new videocard to support the 1920x1200 resolution, and now a new PSU to support the videocard.

There was an article posted here (i think) a few months ago that said graphics card sales were up 10-15% in 2006 compared to 2005

unless you were talking about game sales
