Atleast the source isn't the inquirer.
But the mid-range is what i'll be lookin at.And i hope the performance mainstream cards perform better than my x1900 xt.

If the clocks are correct, this thing should be very noticeably faster than the already too fast 8800 GTX.

Holy crap! We could buy a card now and use it for a few years without an upgrade!!!

I have said that so many times before and gotten disappointed... :|

Games advance too fast nowadays to even remotely guarantee that...

I just coughed up for G80, but I hope R600 is a killer chip. If it turns out to be WTFBBQ killer, there's always the market of people looking to go SLI. But I had my reasons for going Green this round which aren't related to raw performance.

Yeah the chances of that being true are pretty remote, though it would be nice to have a modern version of the 9700 pro.

Do they have to run it at such high clocks to be competitive, or best the G80? (GTX that is).
But then again, this is on the 80nm process right?

the card is 34cm long! WHAT???! HAHAHA, (found link on vr-zone). Lucky for me, I can fit anything up to 19 inches in my case, I know a ton of other people will have to buy a new case. Man..calling the r600 release "interesting" would be a huge understatement.

I dunno if I can wait another month. As soon as 8800gts 320mb comes out im buying some sort of new vid card one way or another. If x2k series becomes the bang for the buck item ill sell the gts, no biggie.

How long has the 7800 series been out? I think ive got a year and a half out of my 7800gt and really I can still run almost anything at almost highest settings. I bet I could get about 2 years out of it.

i have trouble running new games @ full res . Oblivion is the first one that REALLY brought my 7800 to its knees. I wont even try playing crysis on it since it will set the friggin card on fire haha.

heh nearly a full half year after their competition.

Unfortunately for them chances are Nvidia has a G81 on a process shrink waiting for it.

Not sure why people are getting so invested with clock speeds.

I'd like to know more about the shading core, units, and overall architecture. Clock speeds don't really say much when you don't know anything else.

But the the launch date looks legit, which means we should find all the answers out soon (well, 6 weeks, but atleast we finally have a tangible release date)

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the G80 is more efficient per clock than the R600 to a substantially large degree, so try not to get too hyped up by high clock speeds.

The more important things are pipelines and memory bandwidth, both of which look pretty good on the R600 (especially the memory controller).

I get the impression that ATI has struggled with this card and that it's very late, and that they were caught off guard by the G80, which I personally see as a revolutionary chip not unlike the R300.

Essentially ATI would do well to keep pace with G80. The trouble is, nVidia just needs to die shrink and refresh, and they will have the performance lead again. ATI is in trouble this year IMO.

Poor AMD 6 months late on GPUs and a year late on CPUs... the new Cyrix?

Not even close.

Cyrix never dominated or threatened intel the way AMD has over the past few years. Not just that, but the old cyrix chips ran very hot, whereas the A64s tend to run cooler on less voltage than the intel chips.

ATI has always been a very strong competitor in the graphics arena.

Terrible comparison IMO.

The 1st game I had trouble running was FEAR and I have a 5700Ultra. Now of course I used to be able to run games at High res back in the day...but when FEAR was released..I can barely run it with everything off and at low res. It plays terrible. So I just built a new machine with Core 2 Duo and waiting to decide on the graphics card...

I wouldn't either. As innovative as they are, they seem poorly run. Bad marketing and poor business decisions. AMD should have built more fabs or else outsourced their manufacturing as soon as they had a performance leg-up on intel.

It seems as though ATI and AMD have both been in a tailspin for about 2 years now. I don't think merging will help them.

Intel and nVidia have the best product lines I have ever seen right now.

Tech stocks are volatile anyway. Of the lot of them, I like apple.

Just as a further curiousity: Do you guys think that AMD will help ATI with their manufacturing? I'm thinking they will be able to produce smaller, cooler running chips with their help. Just a thought.
