I said earlier that the best time to release R290/R290X is with Battlefield 4's retail release. Send a copy to reviewers with the cards and have it release on the 29th.

It's the benchmark of the year and the game that moves the most hardware, assuming they sweep the benchmarks for the game with the 290 cards which you'd assume with them having the official video cards of the game, it's the smartest time to release the cards.

The best time to release is 5-7 days before BF4 launch since everybody and his grandmother would want the card working in his PC when they get the game.

agreed. a week would be ideal. so that people can get the card installed, run a few tests and make sure its fine. check out BF4 beta perf with R9 290 cards to get an idea of whats in store.

You keep defending and excuse their bad ways. So bella was obviously right.

I don't defend anything what AMD does. in fact the pre-order without perf metrics is something I strongly object. but as far as that 2015 post it was rubbish.

Your blind devotion to a brand causes you to become offended over perceived slights that are not there.

Let's not kid ourselves, we know where you both stand, so i'm not sure why you would even say something like this.

I think this 290X launch has been pretty silly (especially the pre-order), but it's whatever.

Yeah, I'm not sure who thought the pre-order crap was a good idea. I have to say though I have not once seen AMD release an official statement verfiying 15th Oct as the retail release date. I always got the impression it was before BF4 and nothing else was confirmed.

I give credit where credit is due and act accordingly

This entire thing about not releasing a release date is inconsequential and very few tech companies give one. Not sure what sparked the full blown defense but I couldn't careless after three years it's an everyday thing.

I don't understand the secrecy. If I had droves of people waiting to buy something I'm selling I'd keep them somewhat up to date on when you could give me your money. Hell it's like they are trying their best to fend off customers.

to remind you nvidia cleared the NDA on GTX 480 on mar 26, 2010 and retail availability was apr 12, 2010. in this case AMD is actually going to have a lesser gap between NDA expiry and retail availability

your attempt at ridiculing AMD is pathetic.

To remind you AMD cleared the 7970's NDA on Dec. 22nd and retail availability was Jan. 9th, the same number of days of the gap you described for the gtx480.

But neither has anything to do with the R290x and therefore your attempt at defending AMD is pathetic.

Maybe they are just waiting to see if nvidia announced something in surprise to determine prices

Could you imagine the horror AMD would face if nvidia dropped Titan down to $50 less then what they offered. They would be running around throwing paper in the air going "WTF! Nvidia, that is dirty pool!"

Its pretty clear what have happend.

Videocardz write that Embargo on the R9 290 series is October 15th.
Internet assume its the launch date of the cards.

Videocardz write that the Embargo have been postponed.
Internet writes to AMD on twitter asking if launch have been postponed.
AMD responds "No"

The answer is simple: Embargo on reviews and/or sales was October 15th. Launch date have always been later than October 15th. Reviews and/or sales have been postponed til October 24th. Launch date, most likely the same.

When was the last time a company made people preorder blindly without any specs, performance or any price?

And we are already in mid october. Using the term mid to late essentially means they got no date.

AMD cleared NDA on the HD7970 22nd december, but you couldnt buy one until january 8th or something. But its completely irrelevant in this case. Paper launches are one thing. At least with paper launches you know price, performance and specs. The 290X so far have been nothing but an utter PR disaster and alienating of anyone but the most diehard fanboys. Distributors cant be happy either. Newegg wont even take preorders.

You should really read twice what you write

Keep fighting the good fight.

True enough, but, reviewers tend to need at least a week with the cards so they have to get them at least a week before launch date. Then you'd also need to get a copy of the BF4 retail software in their hands as well.

Reviewers already have had these cards for a week though, so I doubt it so going to be 29th. Likely tomorrow, possibly next week, but likely tomorrow.

Those leaked benches already show 290X faster than Titan and 290 faster than 780. So I'm going with they already have Battlefield 4 performance on the lock. They just need to price these cards sensibly now. I hope they are not going for $700/$550 or something silly. $450-$500 290/$600 290X sounds more realistic, or preferably $400/$550, but I doubt they will be that cheap.

Those benchmarks are based on what exactly? The 3.67%-3.69% increases over the Titan and GTX 780 respectively in that graph can easily be realized by picking nothing but AMD favored titles. It is also peculiar that both the 290X and 290 outperform the Titan and 780 by margins of ~3.7% each...

They are waiting for old stock to clear out that they have on sale. Most stores don't have the room or want to doublestock everything or keep back products on hand. They want it sold.

I am wondering if some bug was found by reviewers (driver or otherwise) that AMD is fixing before reviews come out. It would explain the push in NDA release. But since the actual release date for the card was already some time in the future, it is not being pushed.

What kind of bench graph combines 1080p and 1440p anyway? I've seen Techpowerups 'all resolution bench'.. but this one is just weird. I think getting a 290 or greater class card would warrant a display higher than 1080p anyway.. but that's just me.

It also makes me wonder if AMD will have beta Mantle drivers much earlier than Decemeber. That would be a huge coup if they could have a performance driver launch along side BF4..

The update from VideoCardz:

My yesterday’s post about the launch date caused a huge misunderstanding on multiple forums. So let me rephrase what I wanted to say and hopefully this will clear things a bit. The R9 290X will not launch tomorrow, instead it will launch around October 24th, while R9 290 should arrive on October 31st (both dates are just rumors, but a very good ones).

I was also told that October 15th, which was an NDA date in the slides leaked by Donanim Haber (and no, we didn’t made that up), was just a milestone, which was later updated by AMD during the GPU 14 event. Apparently they didn’t update it on time and it somehow made its way to the web. So technically it was postponed, but AMD will just say it was never meant to be launched on this date. Instead they will just claim it’s right on track and the schedule has not changed (of course it didn’t, but we never learned the official launch date).
Just noticed how asymmetrical her face is
