Im sure there is a huge variety of gamers here from every genre. I personally am/was a HUGE FPS fan, but I feel like getting out of FPS a little. Racing games have always entertained me very well, and im looking to get atleast 1 good one for PC.

Suggest any and ALL good, new-ish racing games. Online multiplayer would be nice, but if it has good offline its not necessary. So what do you all suggest? Dirt and Sega Rally Revo are the two that come to mind for me...

Right now I'm playing Race 07. It's an awsome game if you like sims.

I didn't like Dirt so much. I loved the earlier Conin McRae games but dirt was too arcady for me, plus the frame rate takes a nosedive as soon as there are other cars on the screen, even on a good PC.

Test Drive Unlimited is one game that I have enjoyed a lot, but I think that one is best when played with a steering wheel, I use the Logitech Momo.

I hadnt heard of Race 07... i'll have to check it out.

As for using a 360 controller.. i dont have a 360 so that might be unlikely, buy control layout is still really important.

Any word on Sega Rally Revo? How about racing games that arent out yet?

Just buy a controller. They are USB, and you just have to dl a driver pack from the MS website. Sega Rally Revo is so-so, it's like Dirt, but on a more confined track with other cars. The deformable ground terrain is cool though.

GTR2 and Race 07 are more hardcore sim racing from the same developers and demand a steering wheel. Learning curve can be high but very rewarding like taming a wild horse. There is a big community following for the game, and you can find lots mods like new cars and tracks and car setups. There's online racing mode. Graphics are not ground breaking but still very nice. Both games are around $20 which I think is a bargain. Also give Test Drive Unlimited a look if you want something less demanding.

I tried Sega Rally demo on PS3 and I dislike it a lot. Graphics looks rather dated and the car runs on rail which is very unrealistic. Played Dirt demo on PS3 also and like it a lot more than Sega Rally. Only thing keeping me from picking up the game is the price right now.

A lot of it depends on what kind of racing you like, and how difficult you want the game to be.

For not-so-difficult games, pick up DiRT or Revo as mentioned previously. Another good alternative is to track down a copy of TOCA Race Driver 3 (US version). It's also known as V8 Race Driver 3 in Australia, and DTM Race Driver 3 in the Euro market.

It has a great mix of series, from 1950's open wheel cars to modern V8 Supercars, DTM, touring series, etc. Lots of fun to be had, and it's easy to learn. You'll be competitive in no time. Just be sure to use a wheel/pedal combo or a control pad w/ analog sticks.

Also, there's always the Need for Speed series. ProStreet is the latest iteration. NFS has undergone a major shift from its original focus on exotic supercars; with the "Underground" series it started focusing more on the "street tuner" scene. Not a big draw for me, I'd rather play a game where I'm racing a high powered Ferrari than a Honda Civic w/ stickers & spoiler. But with the last couple of NFS games they've started to mix up the car list a bit, and I have some friends who really enjoy ProStreet. I may have to pick it up at some point down the road.

Test Drive Unlimited is still available, but I'll warn you right now...it has a lot of bugs that remain unfixed and will probably never be looked at. Xbox360 players have gotten a fairly steady stream of new content, PC gamers have gotten almost zilch. The TDU PC forums are a grim, dark cavern, echoing with the desperate screams of long forgotten players hoping...praying...for something to keep them going.

On the simulation side, you have a number of alternatives. Here are a few that are available and two to keep an eye out for:

rFactor: The base game features fictional cars, as the game is meant for the modding community. This is the latest evolution of the ISI game engine (EA's F1 series, Sports Car GT, also used for SimBin's games). If you want a sim that provides a wealth of driving experiences, this is the game for you. Plenty of add-on cars and tracks available online for free.

GTR/GTR2: Focused on the world of sports car/endurance racing. GTR2 is a step up from the original and has a great "driving school" to get you familiar with how to drive. Also included in this series is GT Legends, featuring cars from years past.

Race '07: Primarily focused on touring cars, also includes some open wheelers. Great sim, and cheap. I saw it at Wal-Mart a couple of days ago for $20.

Live for Speed: Indie-developed racing sim, you can download a free demo but you have to pay for the full content. It's picking up a good following and has a pretty good reputation.

ARCA SimRacing: This one's still in development. Supposed to be a detailed stockcar simulator based on the ARCA series here in the US. Developers claim it'll blow Papyrus' NASCAR Racing 2003 out of the water, but that remains to be seen.

iRacing: In development, this is less of a game and supposedly more of an advanced simulator. The idea is to produce a simulator so accurate that real teams can use it for training & testing purposes. Known car types include short-track Late Model stock cars, open wheel cars from the Skip Barber racing school, as well as a few others. They will have varying monthly fees depending on what type of content you wish to access, and plan to have sponsored championships in the game. Their goals are lofty; they plan to create the most accurate racing simulation outside of what the big-budget Formula 1 teams use for their own in-house training & testing.

@citizen059: Wow.. extremely informative post. Great information, and now i know what to look for. Thanks a lot

@Canai: Thanks for the recommendation, thats the direction i was leaning also

Last question, regardless of what racing game, some sort of controller (other than keyboard/mouse) is recommended right? Is a 360 controller the cheapest/best?

I really like the 360 controller. And the nice thing about it is that the game comes with 360 controller specific controls (in the menu, you can change it from keyboard/mouse to XBOX360 controller)

And a lot of other games have built-in 360 controller support.

Good suggestions here... great post citizen059!!

I've not much else to add, other than I can say TOCA Race Driver 3 is pretty good. Wide variety of vehicles to drive, and good multiplayer. Not a hardcore sim, but not an arcade game either (you have the option to turn on more sim options or not). I bought it in 2006 for $20 from Walmart, so it should be very cheap now!

Live for Speed is great. Definitely check out the demo.

Richard Burns Rally is a great simulation rally game, even if a bit old. It is tough to find though, maybe check Ebay.

Test Drive Unlimited should've been awesome, but Atari/Eden dropped the ball with it IMO. It is still pretty good but I doubt it will get any more support.

As far as a controller, a gamepad is fine until you really get into the sim games. I have a 360 controller and a Act-labs Force RS wheel. I would get a 360 controller if for nothing else than the analog triggers, which are a must IMO.

The wired 360 controller might be $40 still unless you can find it on sale. There are cheaper ones like Madcatz or Pelican, but I'm not sure how the driver support is for them (I used XBCD 360 drivers), but it should work just fine as it is usually just some deviceID field in the setup .ini.
