I don't think I will ever understand it.

I grew up as culturally diverse as one could. I had friends of many different races, colors and religions. I never knew or understood that there were actually people out there who honestly hated others simply because of race or religion. And now that I'm older and have lived a little more, I have found that there are indeed some small minded people out there who not only judge other but seriously hate them for no good reason.

Here is where I end up confused. The first thing I notice about someone is their race. Not because there are certain races I don't like...its just the first thing I notice. If you ask me to describe the guy who sits next to me at work, I'm going to say "he's a big black guy." But some people seem to get offended by that...and its usually not black people. As a matter of fact, me and the big black guy talk about this a lot. Neither of us can stand small minded people but we also talk about different races and how many do follow certain patterns. These are never negative things, its more just making jokes. Of course the first people we insult are each other. But that's the way I grew up. Messing around with my friends of different colors, picking on each other and not really caring at all about race.

So why is it that people are so concerned about race, color or religion? Why are some people so offended when people talk about someone's race or color? Why do some people hate just because of those things?

I don't think I will ever understand these things. Hell...I honestly thought people hating Jews was just a joke until I came to this forum. Now I see that there are people that hate the Jews just because they are Jewish.

I find it funny when race is used to add to the context/description of a post (aka, in a non-racist manner) and some douchebag has to come in and ask "what does being <race> have to do with anything?". I bet those who say that aren't even offended by it but only say to try to make themselves look cool.

I didn't become aware of racism until I learned about it in middle school as part of the curriculum. I've always been around lots of people from all sorts of backgrounds.

I think the hateful racist people are either old, come from somewhere where the great majority of people are white, or live in some crap-hole surrounded by ethnic hood trash. Fortunately, those old people will die and places that are nearly all white will no longer exist save for some small areas.

I also don't see anything wrong with describing or identifying someone by the color of their skin or their apparent race. Its no different then using hair color, height, gender, age, skin color, etc. for the same purpose.

I just imagine how miserable and shitty their life must be if they're blatantly racist. You have to be doing the wrong things in life if a person of different color etc angers you that much.

Left handed people are a blight on our populace.

come from somewhere where the great majority of people are white
Actually, I think the opposite is true. Most of the historical discrimination that took place in America happened in cities / states with a good mix of black and white people, ie Chicago, deep south, etc.

He actually just passed his civil servant test and is applying with our county sheriff's department. I hope like hell I get pulled over by him some time. I would have fun with that.

Sounds like we had similar upbringings. I still don't understand racism but I know that it exists. I believe its a reflection of a child's parents more than where a kid grew up or what "class" his family was.

As soon as you use "a big black guy" as a friend you have just become racial.

I prefer to think of it as a discriptor. Easier for someone to picture your friend when you descibe them accurately. Thus "big black guy". It implies no hatred. Just describing someone is all.

I do think it's interesting how different people react to certain words and phrases and claiming someone is racist when that is not the intent at all. One of my co-workers, who is black, is also very confused. When he talks to white people, they are afraid to say black, and god forbid they use the word ****** when describing what someone was yelling or screaming. He went off one day, telling people "Look people. Say ******. It's ok. Just say ******. It's a word. Get over it. You aren't calling me a ******, you are saying it because you are describing what someone else said."

It seems like people are afraid of offending others, and thus start throwing around "racism" in an attempt to stamp out any notion that they are racist themselves.
