Radeon 5870 Video playback issue

I just bought a Gigabyte GV-R587UD-1GD. I installed the most recent Catalyst Control Center. Everything seems fine except I cannot play mpg videos. When I try, the driver crashes and sometimes the pc freezes completely. It must be a driver issue because the video will play fine before installing the drivers and I don't have the same issue if I install Windows XP x64. Another thing that is troubling is the fact that Windows Experience Index cannot make a complete run since I installed the card. Is this a typical problem all Radeon 5xxx series users are experiencing or what?

Here is my system specs

Intel i7-930 (not overclocked)
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
12GB (6x2GB) G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 2000 (currently underclocked to assure stability)
Asus Xonar DS PCI Sound
Thermaltake 850W Modular PSU
64GB Crucial SSD
640GB WD HD
Asus SATA DVD-RW
Lian Li USB Card Reader

I was previously running a BFG Maxcore 260 without any issues and I'm regretting making the switch to ATI. Any help would be appreciated.

This is a known issue with the gv-r587ud-1gd cards, a bios update from gigabyte has been released that should take care of the problem.
http://www.gigabyte.us/Support/VGA/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3366

Also it seems that core voltage control is now adjustable using the same overclocking utility for the super overclock version of the card.

Here is a tweaktown forums thread with some oc results using the overclocking utility.

Yes this could be your problem. What part does it hang at? During my adventures with overclocking my 5850 I have killed the Win7 x64 video sub-system a couple of times

Things that may or may not help clear it up. Driver sweeper? Registry cleaner?

Maybe try this one first if you didn't yet....Best to rollback driver to standard vga first.

In the command window which opens, type:
Set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 (press enter)
Devmgmt.msc (press enter)
In the device manager window which opens click View=>show hidden devices.

Nuking the ghost's has help'd me before....Just depends on how bad the system is roached

Then try to remove the ATI drivers....Reboot and install them again. Maybe do a driver sweep after you remove them also just in case.

I have already done a fresh install of Windows 7 and the problem persists. I can play mpgs just fine until I install the Catalyst drivers. I have tried the drivers that came with the video card and also the newest drivers from ATI's website. I get the same crash either way. I thought perhaps I could turn off hardware acceleration in the Windows media player options but I didn't see any sort of option like that.

By the way, the card's temperatures are fine and I've ran 3dmark without issue and got a good score but if I can't play a simple video file, I'm selling it and going back to Nvidia.

That's what I was thinking....But wonder why you ask'd for help also? Puzzled me and kinda seemed like bad advertising to me

Maybe has something to do with the default clock's and voltages for video playback. Have you tried maybe running a windowed version of a GPU benchmark program and tried to play the video's in question at the same time....Worth a try

Sounds like a driver-codec issue to me, though it shouldn't occur when there is nothing else installed. Do you have any other media player (such as PowerDVD) that might install other codecs than what Win7 comes with?

Do you have two monitors? Have you overclocked at all? If so your card may glitch to too low of a core speed and it causes videos to freeze. Check your core speed during video playback attempts in CCC and see if you hit a low of 137mhz.

I have one monitor connected via display port.
I have not overclocked the card.
I installed Media Player Classic and it plays fine there. I have no idea why windows media player is crashing. I am gonna have to try to get to the bottom of this.
I think maybe later I'll try the card in a different PC and see if I get the same results. Stay tuned

Well clearly WMP is the problem. In the past, installing codecs messed up my media player. Have you tried updating it.

What bios version is your card? This was a problem with this Gigabyte 5870 card early on. I thought they fixed this in April.

The earlier bios had exactly what your problem sounds like couldn't run Windows Experience or play video. No problems in games.

Check this out; I don't think it's a driver problem.

I realized that the BIOS might be the problem after checking out some reviews on Newegg. The card has F3 and I'm going to update it to F7. Hopefully that will clear things up. I'll let you know soon.

Do you use any codecs pack(like ACE or something)? If so, that may be your very problem, especially if you did a random selection from the control panel.

I had tons of issues on my old Pentium D machine with a 7800gt, a card otherwise very stable and which is still running btw.

Numerous conflicts with various software installed made me change to VLC and I've been using that ever since-no more issues.

If you want to use the codec pack however, try installing it after updating the driver if you haven't done so already. IMO the whole isuue isn't worth the effort. There are other players out there that'd run without this whole crap.

Problem solved. F7 BIOS allows video playback and WEI finished without issues.
Thanks everyone for your advice.
