I see now that attempts at negotiation and reconciliation are largely useless. My personal belief is that conditions in this nation will have to get so dire that people will be forced to cooperate.

Such a situation would be something like a WWII magnitude crisis, where the Union has a choice of either fighting and surviving, or ceasing to be relevant on the world stage.

Right now, things are bad. People are out of work, their retirement funds uncertain, their mortgages underwater. But the nation is not under threat of imminent destruction, and people are not starving like they were during the Great Depression.

So we fight amongst ourselves, because we can afford to.

Son, i have toned it down so much, during my first two months i was banned for FOUR months, got that shortened because even if i am usually harsh i am usually reasonable and you can usually read what i just said in the news a few days later.

Did you hear about Pakistan and what is going on at the border? No? You will come tuesday.

Just so you know, i'm a Brit in Afghanistan. Not an American.

So, would you rather that there be more rigorous enforcement of the rules in P&N to decrease the amount of personal attacks?

Bloody hell no!

I don't mind the abuse of my persona that some people engage in at all, it's all good by me, i know who's who and i don't have to edit every post at all times.

Back when i joined i was given some instructions, twat is ok, wise and beautiful woman isn't and with the help of moderators (you included, thank you) i haven't gotten banned except for those four months during my first two months.

I sometimes thread over the line but i'm fortunate enough to have people who look out for that and help me correct those instances before they lead to a ban.

I think this forum is doing quite ok as it is and i think the mods watching are doing a very good job where a personal warning or hint fixes an issue before it becomes a ban worhty offence.

It's you guys, the moderators of this forum that makes it into the only forum i visit when i'm away from home.

What? The attacks on NATO supply trucks? The drones that were supposedly shot down?

Maybe he was talking about the The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) calling in air strikes on Afghan security forces. Heh.

Actually, only the US AirForce is working in the area and NO one calls in air strikes without going through the US CoC. So trying to blame US mishaps on others is not really going to work.

However, this has nothing to do with anything like that either, wait until tuesday and you can send your thanks to the EU troops in the area.

If you give us details here that won't be on the news until Tuesday and we can verify it then I will officially bow down. Come on, spill it!

I have been around political discussion forums for close to a decade, and unfortunately I haven't found one any better than this, and some even worse. The OP is 100% correct that many comments made on the internet would never be made IRL.

Another question is whether the internet with its wide information availability has improved our political education or done anything to ease the partisan divide. Unfortunately, I think it has had the reverse impact, as self-confirmatory views and information (both true and very often, false), are now always a Google prompt away. People seek out information that seems to confirm their own biases, and the internet makes that much, much easier. Ironically, instead of prompting people to confront and digest opposing views, it causes people to fortify and rigidify their existing views, and they come to discussions like this already pre-conditioned in this way.

There are a handful of people on any discussion board like this who can be reasoned with. Off the top of my head, I'd say 20% at best.

I agree with what Wolf says above. Many forums are decidedly more hostile than here, although that doesn't mean that we're ideal by any means.

Hostility in politics has a long history, going back before the internet. The gangway separating the two sides of the House of Commons is "two swords length" wide. That isn't an accidental choice of words.

Nevertheless, we do find ourselves in a new social environment, posting anonymously as we do. The usual social restraints associated with the presence or even the voice of others in a discussion aren't there. From the human animal POV, I'm the only one who exists in that sense as I type. I can't read your body language, can't hear how you say things. Of course I know intellectually you exist, but when I type am I addressing the OP, or everyone, or just typing to say what I want and not caring at all? Am I doing this to put forth intellectual arguments or emotional ones? How do we effectively differentiate between the two? Am I serious or am I just trying to ratchet up tensions because I enjoy trolling? Indeed, am I what I appear to be? I could get a kick out of making posts for the sheer delight of annoying others.

There's a whole lot of uncertainty when someone posts. Things are easily misunderstood, the topics in politics tend to be things which naturally invoke strong responses.

We are dealing with a medium that encourages the worst in human behavior coupled with charged topics combined with no real time feedback that we as social creatures have depended on since the beginning of our species. Add to that we have no idea who our real audience is and we have what you see.

The internet is wonderful for the inane, but serious topics? It's highly flawed.

Then we have the arch nemesis of "facts", confirmation bias. We tend to automatically seek viewpoints which reinforce our POVs without even realizing it. We then find what we want, which is self-validation. Once we are certain we are right (after all, there are many "factual" sites which prove we are correct) that sets opinion in stone, and leaves us unyielding.

It takes considerable effort to realize that oneself is not the center of the universe, that other ways of thinking may be equally valid, or in fact correct while we are not.

We tend to look at things and parrot them. "This policy is good for America" without much understanding of the topic, which I find personally irksome.

So this is P&N, and why it is as you see it. At least that's how I view things. I could always be wrong of course.

I've never seen anyone happy with themselves act the way the majority of P&N posters do.
Maybe it's their past. Maybe they were thrown out onto the streets as a child, maybe they hate their job, maybe they don't have friends, who knows?
They assume everyone would benefit from having their point of view, but who would want to be so unhappy and bringing themselves and others down?
Not me.
Childish namecalling, nonsensical retorts, it's what adults do when they are anonymous.
The #1 mistake people make in P&N is thinking they can change anyones mind, especially with all of the above behavior thrown in.
I have yet to see a "healthy debate" here.

Ha ... when ppl start using their real names with contact information & can be sued for libel (IRL), there is no responsibility for what is said ... it is just hot air. It means nothing, has no effect on the community, the state, or a country. A useless use of internet bandwidth.

With the obvious risk of sounding like a mod brown noser i agree with you and i think the mods in this forum do a hell of a job keeping it on the level it should be at.

It's a balance act that you pull off really well and i say that knowing fully well that you and me don't see eye to eye at all times.

You've found a good baseline of what is allowed i think.

I bow to no man who does not outrank me and rarely to those who do.

My job is to keep my men alive and perform the duties we are supposed to perform to the best of our abilities and that is what we do.

We don't incorporate themes such as nationalism or patriotism into our job, it's irrelevant for us, based on military law we can have complaints but that is it.

If a soldier believes that he's doing right or wrong is completly irrelevant as long as he follows the orders given and remains in good conduct while performing his duties.

I don't know anything about you and i'm starting to feel bad about my earlier comment.

Just.. well take care of yourself, i don't know what your problem is and you don't have to tell me, just take care now, ok?

And then there's stuff like this.
Nobody knows what the poster is talking about, but the poster probably feels somewhat self accomplished and proud that he put his viewpoint out there. Yet nobody "gets it".
It really makes me wonder what goes through people's heads as they post.
Sometimes it's rage, sometimes it's bias, sometimes they feel superior for some reason, sometimes I don't think they know.

This is what you say. But your own words prove otherwise. Your men and you will kill whoever or whatever your told to to . You bow low sir. To kill for only the reason of orders is complete lack of Reasoning . Whats it like under a snakes belly from your bent over position its clear you can plainly see it.

No one tells us who to kill, we have a task at hand and we perform our duties to the best of our capabilities, that is what we do.

We don't get orders on who to kill, we get a general mission to be performed and it's up to ME to plan it in such a way to avoid casualties as far as possible.

You may not like my line of work but you should appreciate that i take my work as seriously as i do.

If anyones death can be avoided, that is preferable, sometimes it's not possible at other times it is. This time it wasn't.
