Futureshop is selling 80GB WD 800DJ for $80.00CAN. I was thinking about buying 2 or more and running Raid 0. What type of performance increasing am I going to see when playing games and loading applications like explorer, excel, random complier.

None .you will need a motherboard that that does duel channel ram, since ram is the bottleneck on all computers.

Loading things off the hard drive will be faster, but that's it. You won't get any extra FPS, just faster loading.

BS! HDD performance compared to RAM is lightyears apart. HDD's are, and will be the bottleneck of all computers for a long time!
That said, RAID 0 will not give you much performance boost. Loading large files and apps will be quicker, but in normal use you will not see the difference.

Shop online or in store? Are you sure it is really $80.00 CDN?

Zero. Zip. Nothing.

The only place you'll see any sort of difference, is if you transfer gig+ files around.

I noticed very little performance increase when I had my RAID 0 setup 2 years ago.

Hey wait a minute. Some games have extremely long load times. Like the Flight Sim IL2 Sturmovick, for example, can take like 1 full minute to load from my ATA133 7200RPM Maxtor. Wouldn't a SATA raid 0 be a big impovement loading games with huge playing fields into memory? Or what about when you load a quick save after being killed in a shooter? Wouldn't that be a whole lot quicker?

Um compared to what? You'll probably notice an increase just by adding a single WD JB if you are currently running a 5400RPM HD

Yes you will see a marked improvement in the load times of IL-2 (especially FB). Which to me makes it worth while. I do not notice an improvement anywhere else. But hey, is IL-2 loads quick, what else do you need.

i hae raid 0 setup.. and im going to undo it... not enough performance increase.

My recommendation is to just get a single good hard drive. Not one of those huge 200gb maxtors orr westerndigital drives with 8/mb ram. Those arent that fast at all with 8.9-9.2 ms seek time. Get a 30gb quantum LM with <8.5ms seek time (or something similiar since these are proably hard to find now). It will feel much faster. If you need more space, then just get a scondary drive. but i recommend getting a nice quick hard drive like the one mentioned above for your system drive.

yep, you can probly get a better deal than that too. i just got a pair of WD800jb's (7200 8mb) at circuit city for $65 after rebate. dont every pay more that $1/gig with IDE harddrive, you can usually get closer to 60-70cents.

With non raid 0 7200 rpm 8meg HD's my install time for WinXP pro was >30min. But with my WD Raptors in SATA raid 0 they are < 10min.
