Have a small network but am not on site often, one server has 3 160GB disk in RAID 5 on a Dell CERC SATA card. Recently saw lots of disk errors and had to replace two disks.
Dell mentioned it's a good idea to perform regular consistency checks, as in
monthly or so. Seeking the opinion of those in this group -- Is this a good
idea?
How often is a good practice? Does consistency check run the risk of
damaging, or otherwise impacting the availability of the array?
I came across info that seems to say if a consistency check fails, the array
would need to be rebuilt. That's a big one for me as a remote admin. If I'm
increasing the likelihood of a rebuild I may not want to do this. On the
other hand, am I ignoring proper maintenance by *not* doing it?
