Hello, I was wondering if it's necessary to format the drives before setting up the raid to work. I have 2 40 gig Quantum drives set up on different channels and went through all the setup for a raid 0 setup...but I don't see the drive showing up as a drive....it's like it doesn't exist.

What do I do?

What I've done so far is I just stuck the drives in and hooked it up and typed in ctrl-H at boot andd setup raid....but I should format ....f-disk first right?

you don't need to format beforehand. here's the procedure i used:

put both drives in as master (primary and secondary)
hit ctrl+h and create the raid 0 array
reboot w/ a floppy, fdisk the drive and make a primary partition
reboot again, w/ a floppy and format the drive

should be fine then, from what it sounds like you didn't fdisk it

you need to put the drives as singles, check jumpers some have single master and slave settings, one on each chanel, then boot to a win98 boot disk and run fdisk, some arrays are to big to be given numbered amounts, for patition sizes just use percentages, if this is a problem, set up your patitions, dont know if your dual booting or not remember to specify logical drives in the ext dos patition, also set primary dos active then reboot to the floppy and format, u should format with cluster sizes half of the stripe size you set when you defined array, to do this use the z: switch like this, format C: /Z:8 ,that is 4 k clusters use 16, 32, 64, this number will be actually double cluster size, then you should be ready to install some operating systems. if using w2k make sure you have proper drivers on a floppy it will ask for them after pressing f6 and then s to specify.

Well, I formatted the drives and have all the jumpers on master...put each drive on it's own channel, but I'm wondering if there's a problem with having too much space. Both drives have 40 gigs and I'm raid-ing it 0...so will have a virtual 80 gig hdd. Would there be a problem from that???

I set the cluster size to 64 and everything seems to be connected fine, but it still doesn't show up as a hdd in MY COMPUTER....but yet when I look at the hardware settings, the quantum drive does show up....what's the deal???

Oh yeah, I will be dual booting my system once I know that everything is stable under win 98....but I have my operating systems running under a different 20 gig hdd that I've partitioned to 10gig and 10 gig...1 for win98/me and the other for win2000.

Oh yeah and is it feasible to partition the raid-array since I'll be having 80 gigs....cuz I'll be doing digital video editing and will need all the hdd space I can use....
