Raid setup after switching motherboard

I'm currently running a raid 0 setup using on the onboard controller on my motherboard.
Motherboard: MSI FSR2 and 2 Seagate 7200.8 250GB/each.

Question: If I upgrade my motherboard and setup the the raid using those 2 drives, will my data be ok or will I need to format the drives for the new raid setup.

You will need to backup the data because you will be using a different controller for the array.

As amdskip says, the safest thing is to make a current backup on other disks and rebuild the drive array with the new motherboard. Then restore your data to the new drive array.

If your data is important to you, of course, you must have secondary backups of the data on your RAID array anyway.

I would recommend buying a cheap software based controller card, so you could just move your array without the hassles you get when you are tied to a integrated controller. A hardware controller would be much more expensive and seeing as how you are using RAID 0, it's just not worth the money.

Well buying 2 x WD 2000JS drives would be $154 vs 1 x 4000KD at $180 or an external 400GB drive at ~$225.

Honestly HDs are so cheap per GB these days that they're really the cheapest and fastest way to backup that much data... obviously an internal HD would be faster than an external USB drive though. I doubt trying to burn it to DVD would save you any money... and definately wouldn't save time.

Plus with that much data if it's really important to you to back ALL of it up then you might want to consider an external HD and Ghost (or a similar program) anyway so it can make regular backups of your data automagically.
