hey all, i'm thinking of building a RAID1 setup but i've heard RAID 1 delivers a bit of a performance setback. Does anyone know if its that noticable? If i dont do a RAID 1 setup than i'll just back my data up on a server (but thought it would be nice and easy to eliminate that process all together).

thanks

Yup, try posting this in general hardware. You'll get more response anyways.

RAID 1 has about the same write performance as a single drive, but has faster read performance since it can read from 2 drives. Overhead on your CPU.

just do RAID 1 if you want a simple, easy backup. There really isn't a performance hit to talk about if you use a RAID card.

there are other reasons to backup, what if both discs fail, what if there is a fire/flood/other natural disaster, I personally don't have any raid yet, I gotta clear the space first, but I do make backups to dvdrw's and store them offsite.

There should technically be no difference (alright a tiny, tiny bit) between RAID1 on none. Not to mention the obvious benefits.

umm... no it isn't faster at reading. it has to read from both drives and compare the data.

Any decent(non cheapo consumer) controller can do read load balancing.

And to the OP, RAID is in no way a substitute for backups.
RAID won't protect you against accidently removing stuff, viruses, etc etc.
