i sold someone this ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220011

i never had any problems with it. they did ask if it was memtest stable and i said i never tested it as it never crashed my programs. they said it was working for them with their games and what not but causing 100 errors in memtest. any ideas on this? i never overclocked the ram. i bought the ram from someone on these forums who never overclocked it. i'm at a loss?

You need to find out the configuration of the system the other guy is using. It can make a big difference on the result of the memtest.

i asked him to post his configuration here. i still am not sure whats wrong. perhaps when his cpu was overclocked (if it was?) the ram controller ont he chip was slightly messed up? i dunno. i do know even when you burn dvd's the disc has some errors, but can play fine. perhaps this is the case with this. i dunno :-/

i guess if no soultion is availble here he could always rma it back to patriot? lifetime warranty. i mean i never said it was memtest stable. i said i never tested it with memtest. i do my stability tests with dvd shrink, playing games, and burning movies. if they all work fine i'm happy.

Hey, I am the one who bought the ram and am using it with a venice 3200+ and a DFI NF4 Ultra. I flashed the bios to the newest version prior to installing the ram, so all of the memory settings were at default. This resulted in a cas latency of 3-3-3-8. Quasarsky said it would run at CL 2.5 which wasnt a huge deal for me, but this is the first setting I tried, 2.5-3-3-8.

My board gave the ram 2.67 v, and once I started memtest, it got over 100 errors, most on test 5 with some on 3 and 6. I messed with the settings all the way to 3-3-3-8 with more voltage and continued to get all the same errors.

When I ran prime95 with this last setting, it failed before half an hour was up. I haven't really noticed any issues with doing my normal tasks, but I would really like for my computer to be stable. Any suggestions?

Have you tried any other memory in that setup...was this memory a replacement or for a completely new rig?

Have you run memtest/prime without errors on your own memory sticks? Is your psu a reliable brand and beefy enough for your specs?

Assuming the mb/psu isn't faulty, test 5 frequently gives errors on problem sticks. Since its easy to reproduce over 100+ errors and craps out on prime95, its fair to say that the stick(s) is faulty.

1. RAM compatibility...possible
2. Bad RAM...likely if you've cleared CMOS, retest with Memtest86, and still have error(s).

Spec said 3-3-3-8 at stock voltage. If you want quality value RAM, then go with 1GB Corsair Value Select RAM currently on sale at Fry's/Outpost for $55 AR. These should do 2.5-3-3-6-1T up to 225MHz if they come will UCCC chips.

The ram that I replaced was the OCZ Value VX Ram. This ram peaked for me at DDR454 CL 2-2-2-8 w/ 3.08v, I ran it through memtest for 3 times and it was prime stable for 10 hours.

I have an Antec NeoPower 480w Power Supply and considering I am only running 1 optical drive, 1 hard drive, and an x600, I'm sure my power supply is fine.

I guess if I get some time tonight, I will go through and test each stick separately.

Thanks for all the responses and I will keep this thread updated.

perhaps the new bios has some incompatiblities with the ram? i've also heard of motherboards being picky with ram in certain ram slots. i've read that athlon64 chips are not liking prime? if that makes sense. i dunno. hope this helps some. i'm going to memtest my new ram i bought off newegg now!

DFI boards are very ram picky this could easily be a ram compatiblity issue I would suggest heading over to DFI-street and reading their section on ram

After running memtest separately on the two sticks in the same slot on my board, one of the sticks was completely error free, while the other stick gave me the exact same errors as I received when I was running memtest with both of the sticks in. So apparently, one of the sticks is defective, right?

Glad you were able to isolate the problem. Run the good stick for 1/2 to 1 day under Memtest @ 215MHz FSB. If okay, then RMA the bad stick. Use stock Vdimm.

Can you explain why I should do this?

Thanks for all the help everyone. Hopefully I can RMA just one stick instead of both of them.

A decent stick of RAM should have some headroom. If it's rated at 200MHz, then it should do at least 215MHz if coming from a reputable mfr. For example, I've purchased and tested over fifty pairs of Corsair VS (2 x 512). All have exceed 217MHz speed eventhough they are rated at 200MHz.

If you believe you have a good stick of RAM, then run more test to confirm. I would not return the good stick and run the risk of another bad module.

Electronics degrade with time. If the RAM barely passes 200MHz, then it may meet spec tomorrow.
