RAM problems

Ram has been a pain in the arse lately, had a 512 MB Stick of corsair XMS ram, which was real bad, everything was slow when loading, and slow when starting up and shutting down. So i bought a gig of Corsair Value Ram, though one of the sticks is bad so i'll have to RMA it. So i'm stuck trying to use only 512 MB of the corsair Value Ram, and it's almost as slow as the XMS, and they cannot run together simultaneously. Maybe something is set in the bios somewhere that's making my ram much slower for some reason? I dunno, but it's a pain.

What benchmarks are you using to definitively state that the RAM is slow?

it sounds like his system is gernally slow all around..

how did you know one stick of the corsair value was bad? did you memtest it? if so i assume that the xms stick and other value stick both tested ok?

is your system overclocked at all?

make sure your ram is set to ddr400 and/or 1:1 ratio with FSB if your cpu isn't overclocked. timings really shouldn't make a noticable difference unless they are REALLY screwed up.. since the mem controller is built into the cpu, maybe the cpu is defective?

this is kinda a long shot, as i'm pretty sure your ram is compatible, but maybe there is some compatibility issues with the lanparty.. i know they can be touchy with certain things. however i dont own one and dont have any first hand experience.

The Corsair stick that suspect is bad reboots when i try to run memtest, and is very slow when getting to the desktop, and always reboots shortly afterwards. The 512 Stick i'm using now is also pretty slow, but i suspect it can run memtest, i haven't tried.

My CPU is overclocked 200 Mhz.

Lanparty has been a pain in the arse ever since i got it, so that's probably the main problem. Should i try running this value select stuff at a certain speed?

Corsair XMS can generally run at speeds upto 220-230Mhz stock, as long as you relax the latencies a little. But VS wont really go past 210Mhz, even if you up the voltage and relax the timings. Are you running your memory 1:1 with your FSB? If you are, it's no suprise your VS fails. You can try using a ram divider to fix this.

You may be having trouble running XMS and VS together because they have different latenices. You can CPU-Z each one to find the speed and latencies they are running at.

It is possible that there is a corrupt system file on the HDD that is causing the reboots. Since the system is slow no matter what RAM you have it suggests to me that the HDD maybe getting bad sectors (which would cause the corrupt system files).

If possilbe try a fresh install on a different HDD.

Just my 3 cents. (Inflation )

Well, maybe it's a different problem. I put back in my XMS instead of the value ram to see if i could notice if it was better or worse. Though it's the same, a lot of times when i load stuff it stalls, and takes much longer than it should. I just want to through all my Ram away and buy new stuff, but that probably wouldn't work anyways.

Bump

Still taking about 15-20 minutes to get the computer fully booted up. Tried value select and xms, neither work well, about to throw my whole system in the trash and head to Newegg.

Maybe this will help. When I'm listening to mp3s, as i frequently do, while something starts loading, it will play the same 2 seconds of the song i'm listening to repeatedly 3 times. Like it gets stuck. Then after the loading is done, the song continues normally.

Sounds like something is majorly screwed up and I doubt it is your RAM. It could be a disk problem. You should try scanning for adware/malware, resetting your BIOS, maybe looking at the event viewer in windows to see if there are problems being logged. Does CPU Z report your correct processor speed? Does your BIOS report decent temperatures for the CPU? I would try to diagnose the problem rather than guess.

It sounds like something is hogging the CPU, which is resulting in the slow response time.

Scan for Virii, Adware, Malware and "Add Remove Programs" for programs you didnt install.

A lot of times popups can install programs that will slow the PC.

I really dont think it has anything to do with your RAM.

I do virus and spyware scans often though. Temps seem to be ok. CPU-Z is reading my CPU speed correctly. And i just reset my bios yesterday. There seems to be a lot of stuff running though, according the task manager, probably more than i need, not sure what's what though.

Dont OC the system and try again. Sometime, in my experience, an OC'ed system can cause OS corruption. Ive seen it happen a few times. try not ocing and see what happens. Or try different slots for both sticks. Good luck!

Aye! This problem is annoying. I start up a game and everything is fine, then when i'm done i stop playing the game. Then later, when i feel like playing the game some more, and i start to have these loading problems as described in my previous post, and as follows:

Never happens the first time i play a game, it's only if i play that game twice without shutting down inbetween. What kind of problem does that sound like? I'm thinking there's probably something i could set in the bios or something that would fix it, but i have no idea what it would be.
