RAM question...

I have a AMD K6 500 processor with 128MB of NVRAM. I was wondering if I added a 128MB SDRAM stick in there, then would the total be 256MB? I know this may seem like a stupid question, but the guy at Best Buy told me that it would only be 128MB because the NVRAM can't be added together like that. Also, would an extra 128MB of SDRAM be very beneficial or am I too limited by my extremely slow processor? Thanks in advance...

Are you sure your system is using NVRAM? This would be the first time I have heard of NVRAM being used as system ram. NVRAM info

Chances are your system is using PC100 SDRAM DIMMs and the new ram should work.

If you look at the RAM it should be about 5" long and it will have pins on both sides.

Basic rule of thumb, if it fits then it belongs there.
(unless its a HP calculator link cable, but thats another story)

when my computer boots up, on the diagnostics screen, it says "Checking NVRAM" so I just assumed that my computer used this RAM

I have an Amptron motherboard...I looked inside the computer, and it has 2 more slots open for RAM, I was just wondering if adding another 128MB strip of SDRAM would benefit my system too much. I wasn't sure because I thought my processor might be limiting it (AMD K6 500mhz)

Wow, cool about the NVRAM, if that's what's in your system and I guess it is?
If that's the case then adding a stick of 128 isn't going to bring you up to 256MB. But I think what you are asking mainly is if a 500Mhz machine would benefit going from 128MB to 256MB and the answer is yes in most cases you would see a performance increase. Might be worth it to you to get two sticks of 128MB or one of 256MB so you'd have 256MB total.

When it says checking NVRAM it is checking the EPROM chip and/or processor cashe. This is what NVRAM is usually used for.

And yes you will notice a increase in performance, at least when running multiple programs.

You are not using NVRAM for system memory. The 'NVRAM' your POST refers to is the nonvolatile ram that holds your CMOS information. Many computers say that on boot.

<oops, too late>
