RAM Upgrade

I have an Abit IP35-E E4500 OC'd to 3GHz.

I presently have Crucial Ballistix 2x1GB DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 2.2v RAM. I need to upgrade to 4GBs of RAM. At this rate I might as well pay a little more and replace the RAM.

I am looking for a little more performance to replace this RAM. What RAM recommended?

Thank you!

OCZ Technology OCZ2P10004GK
OCZ PC2-8000 4GB(2X2G) 1000MHZ DDR2 PLATINUM EDITION OCZ2P10004GK for $77 looks interesting.

Any corsair, g.skill, mushkin brand, a-data ram should be fine. DDR2-800 or DDR2-1000 would be fine. There's a corsair 4 gb (2 x 2gb) DDR2-800 for $25ish after rebate.

I currently have DDR2-800. Would DDR2-1000 allow for some more breathing room and performance?

DDR2-1000 will certainly give you more headroom if you plan on overclocking. In terms of timings and what not, you won't really notice much of a difference.

The E4500's multiplier is 11, so RAM speed isn't that important. Even DDR2-667 will let you go about as far as the chip can handle.

You're making a mistake buying DDR2-1000 for $77 when there is good quality DDR2-800 available for $40 or less these days. RAM speed just is not important, and any performance increase you're hoping to see is going to be minimal.

By minimal I mean it might gain you 1-2 FPS on a game that would otherwise run at 30 FPS.

Actually running at a higher FSB I have noticed a considerable difference with this chip and memory. The memory was my bottleneck in terms of overclocking. We'll see how the 1000s work out. I am a little optimistic. For a $30 difference it may be worth squeezing a little more life out of this system and If I decide to upgrade the processor in the future I have a little more flexibility as well for $30.

Considerable difference in what, out of curiosity?

And there's no way DDR2-800 held you back in overclocking an E4500 unless you lowered the multiplier significantly or ran the RAM asynchronously.

Considerable difference in my ability to catch the eye of women on the red light district. What do you think?

That's exactly what I do. I drop the multiplier down and blow up the FSB. It is a thing of beauty.

There's no reason to be sarcastic in a thread where you're asking for advice. I'm skeptical that you've noticed a significant difference in most apps by lowering the multi and raising the FSB. That's why I asked.

In quads you see more effect from higher fsb at the same clock speed, not so much in duals.

I found the red light comment funny, myself.
