Hello,

I recently built a Celeron 300@450 system for my grandparents and they started to have their computer radomly power off. I was wondering if any of you guys know what the problem is and if you do, how to fix it. Is it my chip overheating and I need better cooling? Is it my operating system (windows 2000)? Is it some other problem?

I would really appreciate some help.

BTW, what is the most stable operating system for overclocking? Should I bump them back to windows 98 or bump them up to XP?

XP? - definetely no for a computer with a problem already
they should be fine with 98se or Me with absolutely no heat problems.XP has a tendency to overload computers with limied Ram and processing power...as i have found out with my 128mb system
also, if your cel300 is in an atx cab, shutting it down will be a breeze - just presss the the power button in normal mode - it shuts down safely by either going to stand by and powering down or by direct shutdown
if it is an at cab, you better consider giving your grandpa an atx cab
as for overclocking, you could try XP...it is the best on overclocked comps with atleast 256mb main memory

It's your power supply. MORE POWER SCOTTY!!!! Or a faulty resister in your motherboard but not likely.

Try this. Take off the power switch lead that connects to the motherboard. Then use a flat head screw driver and touch it to the two posts where you normally connect the power switch. This should make the computer turn on. Let it run and see if it turns off again. If yes, then probably power supply. If no, then you have a short in your power switch. I had the same problem with a clients PC and after troubleshooting EVERYTHING else, I discovered this little power switch issue.
