I was using a 2ghz p4 and then I upgraded recently to a p4 3ghz prescott with hyper threading. Now the computer stays up about 2 min before it randomly reboots. What could be causing this?

what are your temps? (you are aware you bought a space heater for a CPU right?)

what kind of PSU are you running?

have you run memtest86?

have you run prime95?

My system looks like this:
Antec Aria Case
Chaintech MPM800 MB
1gb ram
120 gb WD hd
Radeon 9700 pro vid card
TDK Cd-R
300w PS

Those are the only things I am running right now, and I am pretty sure its not the memory since like I said the comp worked fine with my 2ghz. But no I have not run memtest or prime95 yet as I did not even know about prime95. I don't think its overheating either since I put my hand around the exhaust and its not very hot.

What brand is your power supply? If it's a generic 300w that is likely part of your problem. Also your 2ghz CPU probably ran on the 400Mhz FSB, while the 3.0E runs on the 800Mhz FSB. Do you know what speed your memory is? If it's anything less than PC3200 it is being overclocked, and that could also be the problem.

The power supply is the one that came with the Antec Aria case, I have DDR400 memory in it right now, and my mb says it supports up to 800fsb.

The case comes with a 300w antec PSU. Antec's are usualy pretty solid, so I don't really think that's the problem. Did you change anything else besides upgrading the proccessor? Are you using the stock cooling that came with the CPU? Prescotts generaly run warmer than northwoods, so the small case it's in may not have sufficiant cooling. Are you using any software to monitor your temperature? If you are using windows XP did you disable the automatic restart if it errors?(right click on my computer, click properties, go to the advanced tab, click on settings for startup and recovery, and uncheck the automaticly reboot). Are you running any programs when it reboots, or does it happen when it's idle? Have you checked for viruses and/or spyware?

Why do you think I need a bigger PSU?

when ur puter randomly reboots frequently about 95% of the time that is a power fluctuation problem, either the psu is about to die on u or its having a hard time feeding ur hardware with teh electrical power it needs.... so, i would start there; with ur psu. now, if ur puter was freezing up thats a good sign of overheating problem...

anyways start with the psu if that doesnt take care of teh problem (wich more than likely it will) follow the recomendations of stevty on his last post.

good luck

Ok so I was messing with my computer last night. I took everything out and just ran it on my onboard video to try to see if I was just not getting enough juice.. Still reboot on me.. The problem is its just so random, I had my comp up for 40 min last night while I was transfering files to another computer before it rebooted on me. So I am prolly pretty confident its not the PSU and I don't see how thats the memory if I was able to keep it up for 40 mins plus the memory was fine before the new CPU.... Maybe its the MB?

I would run memtest on the memory. I don't htink it's your power supply, but that is a symptom of a weak power supply. The memory could be incompaible with the motherboard. I had some problems with getting my crucial memory that I had on my Gigabyte motherboard when I tried using it with my Asus board. The memory was fine, it just didn't want to work with the Asus board.
