random reboots

hey
just recently, after i installed a new ibm 60gxp 30gb hard drive to replace my old one, i have been getting random reboots. what happens is the computer will beep around 5 times very rapidly, so that it sounds like it it stuttering a little bit, and then a blue screen will briefly appear (for like half a second), and then the computer will reboot.

i am running win2k with sp2 patch.

huh, that is strange....... loose connections? try re-seating everything, ummm bad drivers? most updated BIOS? dont use the drivers for the harddrive, just use the OS loaded ones.

also, try going to system props, advanced tab, and startup and recovery, and uncheck auto reboot

Hiya,

It might be heat - are the drives close together? I had three drives in bays next to each other (an IBM, a Seagate, and a Quantum) and they freaked out, giving off high pitched beeps and crashing. They were very hot.

I removed the middle drive and bought some brackets to mount it in a spare bay beside my CD writer, and it has been running fine ever since.

I would really think about a RAM problem. Usually those give out the quickest BSODs

no, i dont think it's overheating cause i put it in a 5.25 bay where there is nothing above or under it.

ok i disabled auto-reboot, hopefully it'll work, so i can see what kind of error i have.
is there a log or something that will show what my error was.

hmm i just realized i set my computer to "STANDARD PC" and not "STANDARD PC HAL"
would that cause the crashes?
