Rapper from D-12 killed

DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- Proof, a member of rap group D-12 and a close friend of Eminem, was shot to death early Tuesday at a nightclub along Detroit's Eight Mile Road, a publicist said.

The death of Proof -- whose real name is Deshaun Holton -- was confirmed by Dennis Dennehy, the publicist for D-12's label, Interscope Records.

"Memorial service arrangements are still being made, and his friends and family would appreciate privacy during this difficult time," Dennehy said in a statement.

Proof was the best man at Eminem's wedding in January and often appeared alongside the superstar rapper at concerts and public appearances.

He also appeared in the film "8 Mile."

Detroit police wouldn't confirm that Proof was killed, but said two people were shot in the head -- one fatally -- early Tuesday at a nightclub on Eight Mile.

An argument at the CCC nightclub escalated into gunshots, Detroit police spokesman James Tate said.

Wende Berry, a spokeswoman for St. John Health System, said Holton was dead on arrival at St. John Conner Creek, an outpatient treatment facility. Berry confirmed that he had a gunshot wound.

Gee I wonder why rappers are always getting shot up. I go to night clubs just about every weekend and I've never seen a shooting.

I wish I could feel sorry for the guy, even with 2Pac who actually made decent hip hop music, I couldn't feel anything accept that he brought it upon himself. This guy probably brought it upon himself too.

Your right for the most part.

I'd still rather make the choice (albeit an ignorant one) to overdose on heroin. That person is merely harming themselves. Rap seems to harm other people a lot more, not that its the musics fault - its the whole hip hop culture in general thats violent and harmful.

But as I thought about it more, I realized that these rappers are making a choice too - they're intentionally pissing off all of the wrong people and either a) pretending to be hard but really not, or b) really are hard, and as violent as they claim.

Still, I'm probably never going to be a rock star - and I definetely will never become a rapper so this is how I see it as a person who merely listens to the music: I don't have to worry about getting shot merely by going to a rock concert, sure that guy from Pantera got shot up - but seeing fatal violence at a rock concert is very rare. Sure you can get beat up but you'll live. At hip hop events, you never know who has a gun and who doesn't.

Its funny too, because the last rock concert I was at they barely even pat you down, they're mainly looking for drugs so they might have you open your ciggerette pack to see if you have any joints. However, at another concert I was at that just happened to be hosting some rap artists as well - had nothing short of metal detectors at the entrance. Something I've never seen before, or since - but probably only because I haven't seen anymore hip hop events since then.

Ok, man in club on a Tuesday night (who goes to the club on Tuesdays??? Or any day for that matter.). Man in club with gun. Man raps about shooting other men. Man likely to get shot.

If you ask me it's an occupational hazard, and it's retarded.

Eminem and others (likely 50 cent, G unit, whatever) will find a way to exploit this and make money off of it.

R.I.P. for someones son/father, but no condolences for someone who puts themselves in a situation like that and expects to come out smelling like roses.
