this drive's hardly any faster than a good 7200 rpm drive, and cost almost 10x times on a per GB basis. Even after the rebate you have to wait for hoping it comes, It still costs more then the 74GB raptor per GB, which you can buy without rebates. And it performs significantly slower then the 74GB raptor (old technology from two generations ago). And who wants a 36 GB drive these days anyway ? it's just plain stupid. Nice deal for Western Digital though.

Uh....wrong! This drive kicks major butt compared to 7200rpm drives. The smartest thing to do is buy a 36 Gb Raptor for your main drive and then a cheap big drive for data storage (120Gb for $50AR?? Here). You'll have nearly the identical speed as the big Raptor and alot more combined storage (156Gb?? better than 2x) for a lower price ($140?? compared to the $182 big Raptor). This is hands down the best of both worlds.

Seriously, man, compare the seek time. This raptor has half the seek time of the 7200 rpm drives. That's what really matters. If you are setting this up as an os drive (and have a storage drive that is much larger) then your system will fly. Hard drives are the main reason computers are faster than they could be. This hard drive rocks, it's prolly one of the best imho!

I got my 74GB Raptor for $150.00 after rebate from New Egg. All I know is it is FAST !! I have a 120gb Western digital HD for a backup and Western Digital has always treated me very well. I'm waiting for another sale to pick up one more Raptor since this SATA drive is hot swappable on my new system and shows up as a removable storage media icon in the tray.

Good Luck

Waste of money... Old Raptor is tiny and hardly faster than a 7200rpm 8mb cache drive. If you got a high-end system you can prolly afford a 74GB Raptor to nicely complement it, otherwise fvck them.

I gotta say, I agree with those saying that the 36GB Raptor is definitely not worth the money. Check out page 6 of that Tech Report review, the sustained file copy rates. The 36GB raptor gets its clock cleaned BIG TIME by every drive.

I went the expensive route and bought a 18gig 15krpm scsi cheetah as main os and 2 sata 160gig samsung drives raid 0 as my storage. Only bad thing is the scsi is loud but its the price I pay for speed.

Seriously, go look at the StorageReview.com review, the 36GB Raptor is garbage, it loses to 7200rpm drives sometimes. Now, the 74GB Raptor, that drive is INSANE, sometimes it's faster than 15k SCSI drives!

I ended up scoring a 74GB Raptor from ChiefValue for $178 shipped. Not as good as $150 AR, but I missed that Newegg deal. Good price for a drive that can boot me into Windows in about 10 seconds (no joke!).

The 36 Gig Raptor is far from garbage. I get the same 10 second boot into Windows with my DFI nF4 Ultra-D with a Winch 3500+ and ATI x800xl. For short blasts of data throughput, the drive simply flies because of the 5.2 ms access time. An 8.5 minute benchmark as in that review will surely show shortcomings, but for short blasts, this drive will shine with the best of them such as in gaming. I noticed the 36 Raptor did well in that review on games. For disk intensive work, sure there is better, but for everyday normal usage, this drive kicks ass. I still believe what I said before, this drive plus a big cheap storage drive is the best of both worlds.

Edit: Price drop to $80 now, it's a good deal.....
