Razer product quality

I purchased a razer mouse the other month and it broke on thanksgiving (the scroll wheel does nothing but spin freely).
My local store has a 30 day return policy and I had it for 32 days ...
So I returned it to the manufacturer and they sent a replacement.
Now after having my replacement it has broken again in the exact same way ...
Both times it broke while I was playing a video game (I use the wheel button function to walk forward, and scroll to change weapons).

This isn't the only razer product i've had break on me. Keyboard also broke, and another mouse broke.
3 razer products 3 broken products.

I suppose you can consider this a rant, but I'm disappointed in their "made in china" build quality.

I can't have the mouse replaced again, or it'll break again. Should I demand a refund ?

It's the Abyssus
I purchased it because it was one of the only gaming mice I could find without too many buttons (that I don't need and press on accident while trying to play games).

I've had my copperhead for over 3 years with no problems, but mid 2007 was before they went to shit. Wondering who i'm going to go with next. I want a high grade product in terms of materials and sensor/imaging but only need 2 buttons and the scroll wheel. Sometimes I end up hitting the extra buttons on accident.

^I like to keep mice simple too and I've always been happy with logitech gaming mice. Not even because I like to game much but because it's so pleasant to use compared to a regular mouse. I had an MX518 for a few years and I've had a G5 for another year, nice and simple

What you consider heavy use, I consider normal use. I've always used my mice this way in FPS games without a problem. This particular mouse was not built to last, it seems they only put enough durability to barely survive a few weeks. This is not acceptable for a mouse that retails for over $50.

Also I did own the copperhead mouse and it lasted over 1.5yrs with the same usage patterns.
All my logitech mice have survived this usage too (just the glider pads end up wearing off completely from use).

The buttons can be disabled (or removed), i've done both with mice. The main problem is the dpi adjustments, they place those in the worst possible places, and some mice decrease the surface area of the traditional buttons to place these "annoyances" on the mice.

I've never heard of someone using the wheel button so often, so I'd consider it heavy use, and not the ordinary. I can't comment on how other brands might hold up though so I'm not sure if razer is above or below the standard.

I just purchased a $10 Gear Head laser mouse
I'll let you know how it works out for me.

3 laser mice have broken on me in 3 months ...
This journey started when I decided to upgrade my trusty HP optical mouse that i'd had for several months(which I got after my razer copperhead stopped working). Optical tracking is noticeably slower for a performance gamer and I had worn the glider pads off it.

I wish I had not taken apart my logitech G500 and removed all the keys I didn't want ... then I woulda been able to return it when the wheel button broke on it. (I kinda lied above when I said ALL my logitech mice have survived)
They used to use the same type of button (durable square box smd) for right/left and center click, but now use a cheesy little circle/foil pad which breaks. I suspect razer is doing the same in the abyssus.

4 years on my Copperhead (purchased in Decemeber 06) and still works great. The rubber side grips are a little worn, but they're like an old pair of sneakers at this point. Only thing is the teflon feet are getting down there. I should probably contact Razer and see if they offer em, I really have no reason or intention on switching out the Razer otherwise.

Logitech M-S48 was the best mouse ever made
I wish they'd just put the latest laser tech on that one (with dpi adjustments on the bottom of the mouse) and stop changing everything else.

The new $10 mouse is worthless, it has a several ms delay when fighting in a fps.

I took the glider pads off the $10 mouse and put them on my G7
and broke out the soldering iron and fixed my copperhead (turns out the cable was bad right where it goes into the mouse), I also removed the pcb for the 4 side buttons and 360 led lighting.

So now I have 2 working mice
using the copperhead now

Its just you dude.

I've had the Viper, copperhead, diamondback and deathadder. They all lasted for years. I get bored with them and replace for better features before they break. Left my last one at work over two years ago (cuz I didnt want it). Talked to a guy there recently and he was still using it on his system. Before that I had it for 2 years.

If you use the middle button for walking, what do you use for strafing? Please describe your playing technique.

I use left/right arrow for strafe left/right
down arrow for move backwards
up arrow is set same as middle mouse (move forward, double-click for dodge/jump forward)
I don't bother using strafe forward/backward as that requires holding down an additional button in UT99 and some other games
right ctrl for jump (pinky finger), and all the surrounding buttons ie: page-up/down, num pad, enter, etc. for team communication

so I have 3 fingers each on a mouse button,
4 fingers on a keyboard button at all times
so my reaction is only as slow as a pressing of a button

I should have taken pictures of the internals of the mice i've taken apart recently, there are 3 different kinds of switches (each generation gets smaller and cheaper)

not always walking forward, some of the time is spend going right/left/back instead
but essentially constantly using the button for an hour or more of gaming each week.

i've had 2 razer mouse break, still using one of them as the only problem is the middle mouse button doesn't work. tried getting a logi mouse recently but they use the same body style for wired and wireless which makes the wired ones way bigger than i like as a fingertip mouse user.

You sir, are lucky. Every MS peripheral I've had has either broken, or had support dropped. I loved the Intellimouse mice, and the trackball, back in the day, but none would last more than a couple years.

Can't speak to Razers, as I hate the shape of even their smaller mice. An Intellimouse Optical body, with a fancy new 3600+ CPI sensor, though, I would buy in a heartbeat.
