With the GFX940 patches in full swing since first week of March, it is looking like MI300 is not far in the distant future!
Usually AMD takes around 3Qs to get the support in LLVM and amdgpu. Lately, since RDNA2 the window they push to add support for new devices is much reduced to prevent leaks.
But looking at the flurry of code in LLVM, it is a lot of commits. Maybe because US Govt is starting to prepare the SW environment for El Capitan (Maybe to avoid slow bring up situation like Frontier for example)

See here for the GFX940 specific commits
Or Phoronix

There is a lot more if you know whom to follow in LLVM review chains (before getting merged to github), but I am not going to link AMD employees.

I am starting to think MI300 will launch around the same time like Hopper probably only a couple of months later!
Although I believe Hopper had problems not having a host CPU capable of doing PCIe 5 in the very near future therefore it might have gotten pushed back a bit until SPR and Genoa arrives later in 2022.
If PVC slips again I believe MI300 could launch before it

This is nuts, MI100/200/300 cadence is impressive.

Hard to see, the future is. What I can see is the 6700XT, which was/is a great mid-range card that can be had under $300 at times. This was a 12GB card, and IMO AMD should have a good replacement for it at around $300.

The original MSRP was $479 tho. AMD's fire sales are killing their ability to sell new GPUs. It's pretty much a given that people are going to complain about RDNA4's MSRP, whatever it ends up being.

So what's the latest rumour on release dates? I'm hoping to build a new PC this year to replace my GTX1060/i7 6700 system, and I really hope the new generation of cards will be out in time. (I want a system that will run Lost Records Bloom & Rage beautifully on my 4k TV!)

Apparently Nvidia isn't too keen on waiting long after RDNA 4 comes out, I imagine they want to keep the marketing spotlight, so my guess is either AMD will shoot first, around September, either Nvidia will around October. Since you don't want the media to be overlooking your product, that would put RDNA 4 for November, which I doubt AMD will want to wait for.

So I'm gonna shoot my dart around RDNA 4 August announcement, release September, immediately followed by Blackwell announcement and release October.

It makes sense to me, for AMD to release as early as possible, because by the time Nvidia comes down to 5060, it is usually June, and that gives AMD a pretty large window to sell its cards

What's the rush for Nvidia? I don't think AMD will factor much in their decision making. AMD is releasing a card that, at best, will be a 4070TI Super level card. It's not like it'll be some kind of breaking of new ground for AMD, they already have similar or better cards (7900GRE/XT/XTX). Unless AMD really starts a pricing war, Nvidia will just release the 5070/5060ti/5060 or whatever that will beat the Navi 48 early 2025 or December 2024 and call it a day.

I do suspect AMD to be starting a price war at the lower end. Thus I expect them to get the 5060/5060 Ti out quicker than usual.
Also, it is very typical of Nvidia to immediately get into a marketing frenzy whenever AMD moves a finger. Smother the public voice before it starts talking, god forbid positively, about the competition.

So lets say my timeline is close to correct:
- Get people talking about 5080/5090 as soon as RDNA 4 is out, pretend AMD doesn't exist (it doesn't at the high end anyway)
- Check sales in the upcoming months, see if Radeon climbs at all
- Depending on the level of rising pressure, release the 5060/TI a bit faster than originally planned as a paper launch

That's how I imagine Nvidia acting.

Whether there is a chance to see NVIDIA launch GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards in 2024 is still difficult to say clearly at this stage, but it is certain that AMD will not launch Radeon RX 8000 series graphics cards with RDNA 4 GPU architecture in 2024.

some famous hardware leaker is saying no RDNA4 is going to be released this year.

I hope they fix the bug in prices first

the fact that they mention RDNA4 is supposed to be just a "bugfix" for RDNA3 is inherently meaningless. RDNA 3.5 could perhaps be considered as bugfix, but RDNA4 has a completely new GFX12, which means it is a completely different chip than RDNA3 GFX11. Otherwise, it would also mean that they ditched the entire RDNA4, took current RDNA3, fix the bugs, and renamed it to "RDNA4", which is nonsense.

And whether RDNA5 or whatever it will be called is a completely ground up new architecture remains to be seen, because in a lot of aspects even RDNA was not a completely new architecture, but largely modified GCN which changes it´s 64 threads bundled together into a single wavefront to a native 32 threads wide but retained backward compatibility with GCN

Maybe it's coming out on mobile first and/or decided to wait on desktop until RDNA2/3 supply dries up.
That's a credible theory actually, but I don't think we've ever seen AMD release only the mobile chips/lowest chips first.
N48 will definitely feature in dGPUs before mobiles, even the 4090 mobile has only 16Go VRAM.
